Message: Am I crazy?
I just purchased a 2003 Club Cab. $13grand worth of mint condition Dakota, with only 17k miles on it. The problem though.. (for now) .. is the 40/20/40 seating. I'm a larger than average guy (no jokes :) and that bulky armrest is annoying as heck! Plus there is no utility to it what so ever.
I guess since I can't seem to find any "how to" guides on any Dakota stuff, I might aswell start here.
I plan to remove the center "jump seat" replacing it with a custom console housing a 10" subwoofer, Built in Cell Phone carrier, 10 CD/DVD rack, LCD display, and Switch panel. Over the next few weeks.
Upon my first look into the removal of the "jumpseat" I noticed an ominous detail that turned my brow. I removed the two rear bolts (holding down the seats, center section, and center seatbealts)... No, I didnt really look hard before doing this. I found that the center section is bolted/riveted or some crap UNDER the front section aswell and being bolted in the rear.
Whats up with that? It looks as if I have to remove the entire seating in one unit to get that sucker out.. (will do this this weekend, unless someone tells me otherwise-- please?)
well, unless there are objections or limitations, look for my rambling posts (and pics) to come as I delve deeper into my dream console.

Message: I haven't done it myself, but my understanding is that the entire seat must be removed in order to pop the rivets in the center section.

Message: Madbone,
Just actually just took most of the interior of my truck (1998) out and reinstalled it to find a water leak. Yes you must remove the whole seat together. It is rivited together. The seat is a bench seat, but are almost bucket seats also. Kind of weird, but i think if you drill out the rivets, you will be fine and can remove the seats apart from each other. Hope that helps some.

Yes, further inspection of the seating confirmed it, nothing a grinding disc couldn't handle once the seat was removed..
and on a side note.. Found Dakota-Durango.com .. another usefull and insightfull website with tons of helpfull information..
