Subject: Clear Tail Lights = Ticket? IP: Logged
Message: I understand quite well that clear taillights are illegal, but so are blue-tinted headlights bulbs, and many other things. I really want clear taillights and not the "Euro" ones, would they be considered legal if I put a strip of red reflector tape on them? And what would the fine be (in michigan, or anywhere else) for having them? If you have any idea or even a "guesstimate" please post it!!

Message: Dave,
I had clear lenses on my truck for about a year until I got a ticket. The cop was a jerk and made me go to court to prove I had changed them out. The judge was pretty cool about it and knocked it from a 2 pt ticket to 1 point for "missing headlight". I ended up paying about $40 between the fine and court costs.
I don't know about the reflective tape, but if you want to give it a try I still have the lenses. My truck is a 2000 - I will sell them pretty cheap.
Let me know if you are interested.
Brian

Message: From my understaing of how it works (where I'm at anyway) is as long as the color of the bulbs or the lens cover are the corect color (i.e. red brakes, white back ups, yellow turns signals) you should be good to go. I see lots of cars with clear tail lights. However the best thing it to do is contact your local law enforcement. Good luck

Not sure how this would beat the ticket...
I got bagged for having knightrider lights on my car when i was a kid. they said i could be taken in for impersinating a police officer...
lol...
on a festiva! they made me take em off.
but, you know, a few people i drove behind, they did act weird... slowing and pulling to the right... then id pass em. it was funny.

Message: The indiana code of laws states that A motor vehicle may be equipped and when required under this chapter must be equipped with lamps or mechanical signal devices showing to the front and rear for the purpose of indicating an intention to turn either to the right or left. If lamps are used for this purpose, the lamps showing to the front must be located on the same level and as widely spaced laterally as practicable and when in use must display a white or an amber light, or any shade of color between white and amber, visible from a distance of not less than one hundred (100) feet to the front in normal sunlight. The lamps showing to the rear must be located at the same level and as widely spaced laterally as practicable and when in use must display a red or an amber light, or any shade of color between red and amber, visible from a distance of not less than one hundred (100) feet to the rear in normal sunlight. When actuated the lamps must indicate the intended direction of turning by flashing the lights showing to the front and rear on the side toward which the turn is made. If mechanical signal devices are used for this purpose, the devices must be self-illuminated when in use at the times required by IC 9-21-7-2.

Message: They make DOT approved clear lenses, but they look gawd aful!! They have to have a red reflective portion on the tails lense and this is usually accomplished by red reflective tape as Dave mentioned earlier. What is the purpose of putting clear lenses on your truck if you are goin to deface them with reflective tape. It kinda defeats the clear signal idea doesn't it?? I have the carbon fiber euro's and love the look of them. I've never liked clear signals on any vehicle.

Message: doesn't matter where you go, clear lenses are not DOT approved. The euros are but the clears aren't. It doesn't matter what is on there if there isn't a dot number. The only place I've heard of this being strictly enforced would be cali. Most people can get away with it in most other places. Put it this way, clear lenses are cheap, what do you have to lose?

Message: The clears are illegal in Massachusetts. The Euros are legal as long as they have the red reflectors inside the lenses (no tape). Not sure about other states, but clear ones will get you a failing inspection sticker for a safety violation as well as the potential for tickets.

Message: Here is what you may run into...cops who are bored, or are looking for a reason to pull you over anyway. If you have clear tail lights they can classify it, " white light emitting from a tail light", which is illegal. So even if you put some red tape on them, if they see the white light or "pink" glow from red bulbs, you stand a chance of getting pulled over.
After talking to all my buddies who are cops, this is one of the most common reasons to pull a person over, then they can see if you have any other violations.. (PS, im most states rollpans are illegal too)

Message: Roll pans are illegal too, well I'll be damned! I knew the clear lenses were, they say on them off road use only. I still have mine on my truck, and I've only been hasseled once. I was drunk (Not driving but in my truck, someone else driving) and I got all up in the cops face yelling that it was legal (knowing damn well that it wasn't) and for him to show me the law where it's not. He couldn't give me the law where it was illegal. It also helps to have closely related family members high up on the police force.
Later Roby
P.S. Jonas, keep me updated on the rims! later

Message: I work for a police dept in Georgia, the clear tail lights are illegal... and if you lower/raise your vehicle more than 2" that's illegal. But it's not illegal to have colored lights (like blue turn signal, neon ground effects) as long as they dont strobe and it's okay to have a rollpan here. But it's f*cked up GA

Message: I don't know if the red reflective tape will work, but they do sell almost all clear tails with a little square of red on them for chevy's that are legal.
just make sure you get red led bulbs or it looks an orange/pink color which sets you apart and easily gives you away to the police.

Any covers (rams head, smoked, etc) covering any lens on the vehicle that is considered safety related (tail, brake, turn, headlights, etc) are illegal in Massachusetts as of 1/1/02.

cops have to meet a quota, they can give pretty
much any car a ticket, too low, cracked
winshield, wheels larger than factory specs,
too loud, too fast, too high, etc...

My friend has a blue neon under truck kit that looks tight. Texas~limos have under car neon and they don't get busted. To the guys that love lifted trucks, come to SAN ANTONIO, some of the tallest trucks! we have like 3 or 4 offroad shops, and plenty of places to go offroad.

Message: I was stationed in New Mexico for a while and I still wonder if they even have laws there!!
Now that I am in Mizzurah and moded the he!! out of my VW beatle ( HAY, I'm from Cali....... OK) I can't get it to pass the silly inspection PLUS I get pulled over constantly by the fuzz for stuff like tail lights too low, exhaust system, and (my favorite) seatbelts!!! Bugs dont have seat belts, it was an option back in the day. I personnaly think theyre just jealous cause they know I could waste thier squad cars with a " German Beer Can"
I had to park it and get a truck. now that I started tinkering around with the truck, my favorite buddies WHO KNOW ME NOW started pullin me over for that. One guy honestly said "why you gonna ruin a perfectly good truck by lowerin it". HATE THAT SOOO MUCH!!!
I think no matter what you do thats "different" to your truck or car, theyre gonna find a way to say thats illegal. I personally say fight the man!
Oh ya clears ar illegal here too along with LED converted tail lights and rollpans. Got to have a bumper, got to have 15 inches off the ground tail lights, got to be dot approved. Makes me wonder about what rules they have for lifted trucks

Message: Here in arizona, And california, I had a repair order to fix my clear tails after 2 years of using them. I just recently had to change them out. If i had not fixed them in 5 days it was a 200.00 fine! To make them legal, It does not matter if you have the correct bulbs in their, IE Red break, White backup. That does make a difference, but you MUST have at least at minimun a 2"x2" piece of red REFLECTIVE tape on both taillights facing to the rear, not the side. I was told this by the police department here in phoenix but the guy who also works with NHTSA the government organization for National Highway Transportation and Safety Assocaition.. What really pissed me off.. They are trying to get all Aftermarket lighting banned for import to America!!! Stupid Idiotic People.. Always have to ruin something dont they!
