Message: You are correct - the 2001-2002 model year does require a different bulb (stupid Daimler-Chrysler bastards).
The 1997-2000 model uses the 893-series bulbs (or compatible) which is a straight socket/bulb. For 2001 and newer, they switched to an 898 bulb (891 is supposedly compatible) which has a 90-degree bend in the socket. The 893 bulbs will NOT fit a 2001-2002.
I found the 2001+ bulbs difficult to locate on the web via e-bay or google search. Try contacting xenonempire@aol.com and request bulbs for a 2001 Dakota. Contact me at my website if you need any other info I'll dig through my e-mails with that guy for more info.

Message: Try Piaa's web site. They sell a lot of different types of bulbs. I wouldn't be surprised if they have them. Good luck!

Message: it's www.piaa.com
Their bulbs are a little spendy from what I saw. They had the bulbs I need for my '89's fog lights, though. They just might have the ones you need too. GL!
