That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Message: probably the best advice you can get would be from an autobody paint supplier. But you want to make sure of a few things... make sure you are doing it in a clean place and clean your gun out the best you can as you switch from primer to paint to clear if that is the way you are going. Try some searches for "flame painting". These usually give you a good idea of how to approach a general paint job. And if you are using clearcoat, you can hide a lot of surface imperfection in the paint underneath. What i mean is, if you get a bug in the paint and pick it out, you will see a spot where it was...but just dab it with your paint and cover it with a lot of clear, then when you wetsand the clear, the spot is invisible. Just give it a try. I was nervous about painting a buddies motorcycle but it came out great!

Message: well, i'm no expert but just take your time and put a lot of elbow grease into it. Wetsand, then rubbing compound then polishing compound really brought the clear to a nice smooth finish. it pretty much goes...prime a couple times, wetsand...paint a couple times, wetsand some more...clearcoat at least three layers and you guessed it wetsand. You want atleast 3 layers of clear because you will be wetsanding, rubbing and polishing one or two layers off. And watch yourself on the corners and other bends. The paint is a lot thinner there so you don't want to wetsand through it all. If you sand too deep on the clear, don't be afraid to blast it again with some more clear. Are you painting the entire truck, or just fixing spots up?

Message: whole trucks gettin painted, im doin the body work to it right now and gettin everythin i fix into primer.
i have a new front fender im workin on at the moment tho. its been primed once then sanded, and primed again. it needs sanded and then painted.
as for the wet sanding, what grit do you think would be the best? start on what grit and end on what grit? as for the clearcoat, any advice one what would give me a deep shine that i could easily buff out.
this truck is set up for 4 wheelin so its gonna see rocks and mud and other sh*t kicked up on the body, and scratches from the sh*t hangin over the trail. and i dont want to have to worry too much about it. thats the main reason im doin it myself and not spendin a grand at a bodyshop. i expect it to get scratched and dented again, and once it gets too bad, ill just do it over again.
any other advice?
thanks

Message: i have used 400 grit on the primer just to get it smooth enough for the paint. If you want to save some time you probably could skip sanding the paint and go right to clearcoating it. Like i had mentioned before, the clear hides all of the imperfections with the paint. As far as the grit to use on the clear, i used 1000 grit but i kinda wished i had moved it up to 2000 to clean up all of the little sanding streaks. So i would start at 1000 and move to 2000 then the rubbing compound and then polishing. Hell, if you get the clear to laydown pretty good you may just be happy with it without any sanding, especially if you are just going to beat it up again! Just lay the first coat of clear down lightly, then let it tack up a bit then lay down a heavier coat, this way the tacky first coat will hold the heavier second coat better. If it runs, then let it, you can usually wetsand them out with the 1000 grit. If you have got any problems email me jbahr@twcny.rr.com , i will try to help you as much as i can, but like i said, i am still no expert. Also send some pics of your progress if you could. Good luck!

i dunner if im leavin it that way tho, i may shave off the "DODGE", im not sure tho, but i deff like the shave handle look.
one thing i forgot to ask...
the paint on there right now is in decent shape, you think i should strip it all off, or just sand the clear and rough it up and go over that.
thanks man.
oo, you have any pics of your truck?

Message: i would just ruff it up and go over it. fill in any rough areas with body filler and then prime the entire thing. (As far as auto paint goes...primer is designed to stick to "stuff" and paint is designed to stick to primer")That's what i've been told by the auto body shop. No pics yet of the truck, just some of my nerfbars after i sanded the rust off and repainted & cleared it then laid down some flames with vinyl pinstriping. I will put some pics of the bike i did at different stages of the clear(wetsand, rubbing compound, then polishing compound). This should give you an idea of what to expect.(i also only used 1000 grit on this one). I'm hoping to put my body lift in this week or weekend then i hope to follow with some pics.
