Subject: The best way...? IP: Logged
Message: What is the best way to prep a roll pan to be painted? It is already painted black and I need to paint it white. Do I have to sand it? Can I use a paint thinner or stripper to remove the paint ot will it hurt the fiberglass? I don't mind doing the work, I want to do it right.
The best price I got from the body shop was $150.00!

Message: Wash it with dish soap (removes waxes and road oil). Sand it down with some fine grit paper, sand it until it looks dull. Wash again (water only). Hit it with some primer, light grey. Sand again very lightly with the finest grit paper you can find. Wash again. Apply 3 coats of white, make sure you apply them before the previous coats dry. You may or may not wish to finish with a clear coat. Clear coat will make it more shiny, will allow you to avoid orange peel and add durability to it. Clear coat has a habit of making some colors change, metallic colors mostly. White should be immune. It sounds like a lot of work but it really isnt. The roll pan is easy to paint, no hard angles or drip points, and its easy to sand. Primed, sanded, painted, should only take a few hours and a couple days of drying time. Allow about 3 days of dry time with low humidity before stressing the paint with installation.
