Subject: removing automatic shifter knob. please IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 dak and want to replace the factory knob at the end of the column shifter. has any body done this or know of a way to remove it ?
I pulled the end cap and the od button button and it looks kindof like two pieces but I can't figure out how to get the damn thing off.
I searched through posts on there but the only thing of this nature I can find is when lesley broke her stock shifter. can I do this without removing the whole arm? I don't have a torx bit long enough to remove the cover around the shifter, wipper and tilt controls.
before I get flamed for this I have avery tasteful billet shifter from another vehicle the same size and it will fit on the shaft. I will rewire the od else were, I never really turn it off anyway.

Message: Don't quote me on this, but I was looking into putting a billet handle on mine too and according to the service manual, the end of the shifter arm is splined. The handle has to be forcefully pulled straight off. The tech I talked to said the only way he could get them off is to use vice grips and alot of elbow grease. This of course damages the knob but would be ok I guess if you have something to replace it with. Let me know how you make out, I plan on ordering one of them as I found a dude that makes'em for our Dak's.

there are two cables that you need to pull off but the plastic shifter is going to get broken to
pieces who cares you have new billet on not that hard to do but looks nice .yes i just used vise grips and turned it till it broke and some pieces
where still glued and i just took them off till spline was clean and pluged two wires back in oem
part .make sure you dont rip the two cables
