This is one of the best questions I have read all week. I belive that the clip is SUPOSED to be used to hold cards ( like esspresso card and such), because it is much to small to hold anything of a large size and I do not know about yours but mine is so gosh darn stiff I cant get anything but a few buisness cards in there anyway :P.
But I think that is was just one of those thing added to be one more thing to use. How many of you realy use your sun glasses holder in your overhead console??? My dad does in his Suburban but he is the bigest nerd ever (I love my father).
I wish that they had not put the clip there though so that it would smooth out the look of the overhead console, but that is my personal opinion.
Anyway that is my guess...lol
oh and fang I an a auto illiterate. WTF are choppers??? Your not putting a motercycle in there (the only chopper i know). Could you enlighten us a bit???
So in the end clippy thing = cure for canser or worthless goofy extra thing.

I clipped the plastic belt holder that came with my Motorola cell phone to that clip. Handy place for me. I read somewhere a guy velcroed a small mag-light up there.

The clip is there to take up space. The computer thingy that tells you mpg, temp and all that other good stuff goes there. So if you had that on your truck you wouldnt have that handy (note the sarcasm) clip there. Late guys

Sorry guys, but believe it or not, it is there as an instruction for the people putting together the consoles. Those with the computer have to have that plastic piece "clipped" off. I bought mine without the computer, and when I asked the salesman (who is a Dodge expert, unlike some salesmen who no next to nothing about the product they sell)he explained to me that it isn't a clip for use, it is supposed to be clipped off at the factory if the trip computer goes in there.

to offer you my thoughts
(roughly 20 years)..Here's
the answer : I have no idea.
It's way too small to hold a
9mm clip.. Maybe obnoxious
children could hang upside
down from their shoes when
they misbehave.. I will
correct you on one thing you
mentioned.. That thingy in
the middle was not designed
to be used for eyeglasses
and sunglasses... Don't be
absurd man.. It's CLEARLY a
taco holder.. Safety feature
so that when you're about to
be involved in an accident,
you put your (only 1) taco
in there and snap it shut so
that the shell stays intact
upon impact..Heh,that
rhymes..
