Subject: Painting under truck IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys,
I got a question for you guys. I was looking though some old post here and I came across one members sight. On his sight he had some picks and tips on how to paint the underside of our trucks.
This look is GREAT and something I would realy like to do since I have a lot of free time.
Here is his sight with the painting instructions.
http://www.geocities.com/dak2nv/under.html
He states that the stuff he used can only be found in canada, and that Rustolium can be a good subsitute for here in the states.
I realy want to do this but in white and black, instead of blue and black.
Can anyone tell me if rustolium works and what exactly I should look for or if there will be any problems with painting under my truck.
Thanks in advanced for any help on this matter.
remember I would like to do it just like him, with a paint brush and time.
Always thankfull,
Ben

Message: try por-15. It is made for restoring. It looks great too because it chemically bonds to the metal or something like that...

Where can I find this "por-15"? Is it in a can like the stuff he used so I can paint it on with a brush? And does anyone know what the aproximate cost of this mod would be (I am not a rich man).
Thanks again guys.
Always thankfull,
Ben

Message: Go to www.por-15.com and this is their website. It is not the cheapest in the world, but they have a variety of paints that are designed for different applications. Check it out and see if you like it.

Message: Hey ram98,
Thanks for the reply! I took a look at the por-15 site and it was very informative. Their paint is definatly not out of my price range but do not know what version to get. Should i get the anti rust paint in semigloss black or do you guys have a differany sugestions. There was no white in the antirust so what should I use instead of that?
Is there any other options instead of this por-15? maby something that I can pick up at an auto store or a paint store?
Also I would like to know if anyone advises AGAINST doing this mod? Are there any problems that I can expect for doing this or will it just be a cool thing to help me stand out.
Thanks a ton for the replys and i hope i get more.
Always thankfull,
Ben

Message: Rustoleum is bought at home depot, autozone, and many other places. Its a Spray Can Paint, they make it in brush style, but the website you listed says he used the spray version. The Spray version is much easier. They have it in a multitude of colors. Its not expensive, go to your local home depot and check it out. Paint isle.

Message: I'm the guy who painted the underneath of my truck. It was all done with brushes NOT spray paint. Rustoleum is the same paint as tremclad that I used. Just make sure that the paint doesn't need a primer and that your surface is clean so the paint can stick.

Message: I can vouch for the por-15. I used it on a set of headers for a vw bug and its amazing stuff. Brushing it on will take two coats but its well worth it. If you ask... they will send a brocher. they sent me one like the next week. Great stuff.... drys rock solid!!! I even spread some on soft aluminum and tryed cracking it off by flexing it. Even sent a step further and blasted it in a sand blasting mashine and finally got it off but put up a GOOD fight. Its like it "dyes" itself into the metal

Message: Well,
It is great to hear from the man that inspired my idea for paining under the truck. But I am kind of torn. I think I will go with this por-15 if it is as good as you guys say. I have used rustolium before and it is good, but if por-15 really does as well as you say it does I will definatly go that way.
Can I get a final opinion on what I should go and HOW MUCH TO GET?!?!?!?!
I can get a can of rustolium for 7 bucks or the por-15 stuff fopr around 20. Is it worth the extra and is it as eazy to use as rustolium?
Thanks again guys!
Always thankfull,
Ben

Message: I used the Spray version, its easier, brushing usually shows brush strokes even if you are good. The guy who did the painting under the truck did both versions, it shows a paint can on the ground in one of his pics and in another he used a brush. I wouldn't use a brush, not enough arm space to make the stokes when your under the vehicle.

Message: That spray can in the background in that picture is brake cleaner I used to prep the surface before brushing on the paint.
I used one quart of black paint to do the painting and still had a lot left over. Rust paint when dry doesn't leave brush strokes it drys smooth it all depends on the surface being painted. With spray paint you have to worry about overspray which doesn't look professional.

Message: Hey guys thanks for the info!
One more quick question. I am not a small man by any means. I am only 6 foot but I am a amature body builder and am over 235 lbs. I do belive that I would have a problem squeezing under my truck. Even with jack stands my chest rubs on some parts of the truck. Is this a mod that I should just leave be, or should I make my girlfriend do it (she is the one that realy wants me to do it).
Any more help would be great. Thank again guys!
Always Thankfull,
Ben
