Subject: Colibri Power Windows IP: Logged
Message: I just installed the Colibri Power windows. The switch kit has a diagram which shows one power lead (positive +) and one lead with a light bulb on it (also shown as positive +)
I have the power hooked up and the winows work great...but I still haven't connected the 'lightbulb' line to anything.
Has anyone installed this kit before? Where does this 'lightbulb' wire tie into? I assume it is meant to tie into a line which goes active when the lights are turned on.
Is there an easy way to pull the stock fuse box and tie into the parking light line? I can't seem to figure a way to get behind that fuse box.
I have a 99 Dakota
Thanks
-Kevin

Message: I bought the Colibri Star Kit for around $140, which included lighted switches.
I put the switches (2 on the drivers door, one on the passenger) about 1" forward of the door handle mechanism.
The kit comes with a black hole plug which covers the hole left behind by the manual window handle. They come in several sizes all in the kit, I had to use a fairly deep one as the handle for the dakota stuck out quite a bit.
Take a look at this installation page, which shows the install on a chevy van....it's essentially the same as the Dakota:

Message: Hey Drew!
After all these questions, I ended up picking up a circuit test light(looks like a screwdriver with a lightbulb). Then I simply tapped each wire before and after turning ignition switch on (or in the case of the lights, turning parking lights on).
I found all the connections I needed and soldered the wires in place. My installation is officially over! Of course in the process I broke one of the switches :-( (passenger's side). Fortunately it was only the face of the switch (with the buttons), so when I contacted A-1 electric, they said they would send me one no charge! Since I already did the wiring for the switch, I simply need to plug in the replacement face and I'm golden (right now I have the door panels back on, with the wires for the switch hanging out the hole I made for the switch).
My inexperience with electrcial connections made this job take longer than it should, but the final result is great. Power windows and door locks work great!......now for the new Alpine deck!

Message: damn damn damn, I have a short somewhere. Hey Drew, do you recall what amp fuse you have for your windows?
I had a 20amp, but after using the windows once or twice, the 20amp blows? The kit didn't come with a fuse...so I thought maybe I'm using the wrong rated fuse? Then again, I have been using these windows with no probs for a week now...so my guess s that it's a short.

Message: I don't think it has a fuse other than where you wire it in but I think if you shorted something its either where wiring goes throught the doors into the body or its catching inside the doors in a window trak. good luck let me know drew

Message: Just found the problem. It was not a short! I was simply using both windows at the same time when the fuse blew. When I use them alone, they wrok fine and don't blow the fuse, but if I hold both windows down or up, the fuse blows.
I put a 30amp fuse in there and it works perfect. I actually tested a 25 and that worked as well...so I went up one more in case it would eventually stress the fuse. Of course I should find out what the wire is rated to just to be sure, but in the meantime, that was a fairly easy fix.

Message: I in-fact purchased mine at A1 electric:Colibri Window Kits
I got the :Colibri STAR Kit which came with everything I needed, including 3 switches, 2 for the driver's side and one for the passenger's. These are the flush mounted switches - p/n 4980-21-007 (4th pic down with the arrows on them), they are lighted (I hooked them to my dimmer switch). Window Kit cost $140.
I also purchased the Power Locks as well, which cost <$60.
I'm happy with both installations. They are both universal kits, so I 'believe' they would fit your vehicle as well.
Hope that helps.
