Subject: Paint chip and scratch repair IP: Logged
Message: Do any of you know a good way to repair/repaint scratches and chips without it looking like crap? My blue '01 Dak is my baby, and its time to do something about the little door dings and rock chips. I've heard about some product that Mothers makes for doing this, but I'd like some first-hand knowledge on the reliability before I ruin my paint.

Message: Scratches, depends on what type of scratches. If you can feel the scratch with your finger nail, it won't buff out. If the scratches are just in the clear, you can buff it out, but WARNING if you havent used a high speed buffer before, take it to someone that has, and knows what they are doing, ESPECIALLY with Dodge vehicles. You can burn a dodge quicker that you can say cum bubble. Anyways, any good detail/scratch removal job consists of 4 basic steps. 1) Wash throughly, preferrably by hand, and since you are going all out, wash with dish washing soap. ( this will help breakdown deposits "stuck in clear, as well as take off your exsting wax). 2) Once dak is completely dry, use a paint cleaner:Meguiers is good, I prefer 3M products. The cleaner has mild abrasives, which will help flatten out clear coat, and remove what soap left behind: bugs etc. I prefer to apply this by hand, and then remove with "clean" pad, using a high speed buffer, this speeds up the process. 3)Apply polish, again the above mentioned will work, as well as application and removal listed above. Remember to keep buffer moving at ALL times, and never let the buffer just sit on vehicle while operating. 4)Apply a good wax, as listed above, except this time for removal use an orbital buffer, with a clean bonnet. YOur paint after this, should look next to brand new. If scratches are still prevalant, wash with dishwashing soap to remove all your hard work, get some 2000 grit wet/dry sand paper, properly soaked in a bucket of water, and wet sand the problem areas. Then do steps 2-4.
For chips here is a nice trick, get a book or two of regular plain matches, with the paper ends. Lightly dip end of match(not the end you strie to light, but the paper side) and steadily apply touch up. This should lay the touch up paint nice and smooth. Hand wax areaat least two days after application of paint, and your good to go. Phew that was alot of typing.
