I've also wondered that many times.

yes you can. just make sure ur hand is good and dry grab a hold tightly around the knob and twist either way and pull out from the shifter. it took a few trys but i got mine off. i drilled a hole in one of my 2 3/4 eight balls and slaped it on there looks kinda cool but i'm just gonna keep it on long enough to get a new shift knob
