Ok My 87 dodge dakota is a straight 4 cylinder with stalling problems i will be driving shift into 3rd then it will just stall with out me even knowing ...it sounds like somethin resets there is like a ding type sound.....Any Suggestions?

Ive got an 87 dakota and have been fixing it up since last june. It was my grandpas since dec. of 1986 and he gave it to me when i was 16. Now im 17 and have had it painted, American Racing chrome (15x8) rims w/BFG tires, and a teanu cover along with dual exhost. Its got a 3.9 under the hood but I was looking to get a 5.2 and put in it. Ive never heard of this being done and dont know if its possable. I have a 2 bbl right now but would get the 4 bbl if i had a 318. If anyone has ever herd of this 3.9 to 5.2 change, I would like to hear about it.

87dodgeguy... iv been thinkin the same thing and found out a lot of stuff. is yours 2wd or 4wd?
if its 4wd.. search for the post "87 4x4 V8 swap" in the V8 forum.. it talks about puttin a magnum 318 into a 4wd.
how ever, if its a 2wd, you can still pick up some info off this post. but take a look at

you can buy motor mounts to mount a premagnum 318 into an 87 to 96.

I just checked out those web sites and it sounds like it will definatley be a project. But my uncle owns a shop and ive another car to drive while im swaping motors. But i do have a question, do you know what kind of trany i have? All i know is its an automatic 3 speed, and i was going to get a motor with the trany included.

i had the same problem with my V6 and come to find out it was the battery, if the connection to the battery is lose or corroded it will reset everything in your truck including your clock on your radio.

hey dodgeguy, i'm curious as to what kind of carb. you got and what kind of gas mileage you get. i also have the 3.9 and an automatic trans.
i get horrible gas mileage. i have a 87 with stock everything and only 53000 miles but it has no power and sucks gas. also i have a gas leak in my tank, it is cracked/rottrd in some spots. what can i do about that?
i've put alot into the stereo however. i have a jvc mp3 player, 4 speakers, 2 tweeters and two ten inch subs with an 800 watt amp.
also, when i push the a.c. button absolutely nothing happens. the compressor doesn't even try to engage. could this be electrical and is it worth fixing?

brad, I just had the 2bbl carb. rebuilt about two months ago. and it didnt really help anything, except it idols a little better. in fact it idols and runs perfectley even when you stomp on it. But that dosent seem to mean anything because it still gets only 14 mpg on a good day. but then again it does have over 200000 miles on it, and looks brand new.
sterio hungh, ive got a bosonic head unit with a couple of kenwood 6x9s in the back that rock.
I dont have a clue about your ac, but i can tell you what happend with mine; When i inhearited the truck it had leaked out all the R12 from the system and did not work. but last fall i bought some LEAK STOP R12 and threw it in there. I think with that and also the probably corroded lines stoped the leak and only then did the compressor kick on. I did not buy enough R12 to fill up my system because i didnt know if that compressor worked. as a result it dosent really give me cold air, but this spring i will fill it up the rest of the way and all will be swell, hopefully.

i can't understand why they get that bad of gas mileage. o well, maybe i'll go get my a.c. checked somewhere. i live in houston so with summer just around the corner i have a feeling i'm going to want and need it.
i just got new tires (slightly bigger ones, 235 75r15) and i seem to have a little more speed because of the larger radius. and it makes the truck look alot better. the bigger tires also raised the truck up alittle and it feels better to drive.
i put a toolbox in the bed and it helps make the long bed seem shorter and looks less stretched out.
mine desperatly needs a paint job. i'm thinking about a charcoal color. it should be sweet.

Then you have to hook up an eletric fan and through away your another fan. you should not have put that r 12 in there, since it was already empty, i would go ahead and get the newer stuff and put it in there.
