Subject: Grille Inserts - low quality & expensive IP: Logged
Message: I've had a set of SS grille inserts for about 3 months now. Both top and bottom and let me tell anyone thinking about getting them from SS .. they are pieces of junk. First in the 3 months I've had them the extension lever they supply to route your hood latch is a joke, it's come apart three times and not because I put it together wrong in fact I've reinforced it twice and it still shifts and once it prevented me from getting into my hood! Anyone who has the SS inserts knows what I'm talking about.
Does anyone know of any quality inserts out there? I hate the straight line billet thing, I love how the SS grilles look I just hate how cheap and unreliable they are. I'm seriously considering going home brew and throwing these out.
Thanks,

Message: if the latch is an issue, make your own vs. using theirs. I used old fish tank tubing, some steel heavy picture hanging wire, cable ties, and sum beers. Works like a champ.

Message: I have had mine for almost 2 years now and have never had any problems. Are you saying the grill is junk or just the hood latch? I have heard of some guys using a piece of coat hanger with a loop on the end or even a shoe string to open the latch. Good luck.

Message: As with any modification project, the min. beer requirements is at least a 6 pack.
I forgot to add that I looped the bottom portion of the steel wire, cable tied and taped the wire, and attached an old key ring, to use as a pull. It ain't going anywhere, I wish I could say the same for the beer inventory.

Message: Oh I paid 87 bones for just the top which I've had a bit longer. I got it from a group buy on the dak/durango site. Then I got the bottom for 60 something. I've tried to secure the cable down a bit with some metal round clamps, you know the kind you screw and by screwing it you pull more slack out of the metal band. Well anyhow, that helps a bit but not too much because it squeezes the outer shell and prevents the wire from moving so you cant really come down on it. The shoe string or hanger actually sounds a little better, SS tried to make the mechanism somewhat fancy but I think a hanger would be best. I'll have to try it this weekend.
ORANGEDAKOTA, I'm talking about both... first off the inserts themselves are so rough on the plastic that they send you an entire grille to go with it which is great but that's why they cost so much. Plus they are NOT precision cut, you can't tell me yours in perfect in every corner, and yes the latch system bites. Also, I'm in my engine bay at least twice a week. I met a guy with a durango 2 weeks ago at a water ice stand and he has the SS upper insert.. he hadn't popped his hood in so long I had to remind him how to do it! So yeah, a driver like that probly wont have issues. He had an AF hat on, a fake tan and looked like an old tennis player so I kind of pegged him for a lamer when it comes to engines/mods/etc...

Message: you people obviously need some fabricating lessons or something i installed the latch in about 20 minutes and it works great. It is all about the way you route it. I believe the best way is to angle it behind the grille over to the left side. Use the cable clamps provided with the kit and you should have no problems!!!
