Subject: billet grille??? IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone bought the Steel Horse or Pro Comp billet grille for a 97 or newer dakota? I bought one from 4 Wheel Parts Wholesale and it sucked. The instructions were horrible and it didn't fit. You could tell how it was suppose to fit, but the holes were way out of wack. Has anyone found a good billet that fits?

Message: i installed the steel horse from 4wheel parts on a 2002 dak.
the directions are obviously for the older daks, but it actually turned out damn good for me.
hmm. my truck is at my office right now, but i know that you have to install it upside down, so the slanted/bent? tabs attach to the reinforcing bar for the grille shell.
ill try and take pictures, but if you center it correctly, it comes out just fine.
just try putting it upside down (it will look like the bars are backwards...that the half with more bars will fit the smaller grill opening (top or bottom).
i was pissed when i got it, but now im very happy with it.
hope that helps, but im sure pictures will help more, so ill try.

Message: So the two tabs that are on the outer edges of each piece actually mount towards the middle of the grill? I'm sure the pictures will be a big help. Thanks!

Message: I have an '01 and got the billet grilles from Steel horse too.
They are installed,,and look good......
..but it took me my best friend,,,beer,,a plasma torch, grinders, elbow grease, cussing, and 3hr.s to get that crap on. The lowers were perfect.
Be careful the first time you close it, and MAKE SURE THERE IS NOTHING THAT WILL PREVENT YOU FROM OPENING IT AGAIN! The radiator supports got in my way,,and bent the crap out of the bars in the grille (the bend back though)..Real pain in the arse to install...but look great!

Message: ZenDak, did your radiator get in the way of installing your lower insert? I have the lower insert for my 99 and the radiator makes it impossible to fit behind the valence. I might be able to make it fit with a lot of grinding.

Message: Looks damn good Erik! I've already sent mine back to 4 wheel parts with a note telling them what I think about their "custom" fit grille.

Message: My top install was about the same as erik. Little headscratching but for the price..... I'll take it. The bottome will probably be zip tied in place. I got a SS bumper soit seems to have enough room once I squeeze it up ito place

Message: I installing my steel horse grill insert last night. It took my dad and I about 2 1/2 hours (and alot of headscratching). My transmission cooler bushings were in the way also. Little trimming cured that problem, but like ZenDak said, make sure everything is clear before you slam the hood. The installation takes a while but in the end it was worth it.
The problem now is the bumper insert. We tried, but it was like it just wouldn't fit. How is the best way to make it work? Please help.
