Subject: Stock Fog lamp Assembly replacement IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 sport with the stock foglamps. They are very cheap lookin and as time went on, got scratched and so forth. I would like to replace the whole assembly with an aftermarket light that would fit the stock holes without too much hassle.
I believe I read awhile back that someone found an aftermarket round assembly that fits that stock hole...and that they simply attached the bracket somewhere behind the fender.....maybe PIAA lights???....although I would rather not pay top dollar for simple fog lights.
If you have a part number, or instructions on how I would install them in the stock location...I'm all ears.
BTW....how much do the stock fgoglamp assemblies go for?? I assume a ridiculous price :-(
TIA
Kevin

Message: Kevin, I've been researching this issue for a while. I've got a 2001 Dakota QC with the stock fogs both of which have been replaced under warranty and now one of the replacements is cracked again. It seems that replacements include PIAA 510s, Pilot PL119s, and a WalMart light made by Pilot. The main problem I've got is that I'd like to wire them into the stock harness and retain the factory switch; but, the stock system uses a floating ground while it seems that the aftermarket lights use a case ground. Any of you folks figure out a way around this? Mount the replacement to the stock (plastic) housing to isolate the light from chassis ground? Thanks, Steve

After reading all of the above post, I figured out the aftermarket pilot lights with the factory switch. My lights came on all the time just like mentioned above. I found that the aftermarket Pilot lights are grounded through their mounting brackets. To stop this, I removed the lamp and U bracket mounted to the lamp. I then installed a plastic washer under the two screws holding the U bracket to the lamp. This washer broke the ground and when I hooked everything back up, the fog lights work just like they were factory installed.
later.

Message: TarheelSLT, Thanks! Somehow I missed that post in the zillions I must have read.
Kevin, Approximate prices for the lights I mentioned above PIAA 510s ($200ish), Pilot PL119s ($80ish), and WalMart ($40ish). I've seen prices for OEM replacements on the order of $75-90 each.
Hope this helps. Regards, Steve

Message: FYI------I bought a set of the blue Pilot's (49.95) from a guy on ebay that had detailed instructions on how to wire them and make custom brackets that are easy to mount. He sends the info with diagrams with the lights. The lights will not mount directly where the factory ones are. They must be attached to some sort of bracket. I put my set on in about an hour including removing the bumper. You have to drill 4 holes in the bumper to mount the new brackets. You buy the brackets from the hardware store...Easy...
