Hello all quick question for you, I am looking for a set of 18 inch to 20 inch wheels for my 2000 dodge dakota. Ive been searching around for the best deal I ran into one web site that has a set of wheels I like how ever there is two different selections of wheels chrome or polished I love the polished prices but am very worried about the quality and how long the polished will last and look good. What do you guys think go cheaper and get polished or save up a bit more and get chrome? basically I need to know the difference. Thanks for your time

ok, i have 20" polished colorado customs. i wanted to chrome them because, they are easy to keep clean and they are always shiny.
i decided not to because. $400 to chrome all 4, over time the chrome will chip where the tire bead is and the tire will lose air, i am running a 35 series tire and have bent 2 rims. to repair a rim cost's $65-150 + $100 to rechrome the rim.

its just too much money to " keep up" the chrome. sure the polished takes more time to clean but i think they look better when clean and the money you save on buying polished you can put it toward the outragous price of the tires.

If you go with the polished rims, you can clear-coat 'em, which will keep 'em from oxidizing and becoming dull and cloudy-looking. Clear-coat ought to last at least a couple of years before you might need to reapply. I actually heard that if you simply WAX a polshed rim, that it won't oxidize, but I can't confirm this.

Why not
wax the chrome rims to.
Chrome rims will always look 10 times better
than polished rims , ALWAYS.

why would you need to wax chrome rims? some windex cleans them up easy.
after thinking about this i have to say polished rims are more expencive than the crome rims. if you look at companies like B.Cottington, budnik, and colorado custom vs. KMC, neeper, and nichee the polished are usually more. that is because the polished aluimum rims are a 2-piece rim as opposed to a 1-piece chrome steel rim. also the aluimum rim is lighter than the steel rims.
i would much rather bend a polished rim than crack a steel rim.
i also think a properly polished aluimum rim looks better than any chrome rim on the market! (when putting it on a truck) which is another reason why i did'nt chrome mine.

This is somewhat a hard question to answer, it all depends on what look you want to have with your truck. I personally prefer the polished wheel look on mine since the paint is the "Flame Red" and I think the chrome just stands out too much against it. But at the same time if the truck is a black truck I don't like the polished as much as I like the chrome, the contrast of the shiny black and the shiny chrome looks nice while polished just looks "plain" or dull against a nice (darker) paint job.
I don't have my wheels yet, but I have picked out a set of six spoke polished wheels for mine.

I would agree with Walter. If you have a strong color on your truck, like red, polished would be a more 'muted' look letting the paint stand out. If you have bright silver paint like mine I would recommend the chrome.
Other points to ponder:
1. If you have the chrome grill & bumper, or nerf bars, chrome would match better.
2. Most polished wheels come clear coated and will need to be washed weekly and waxed monthly to stay looking good (not to mention hold up to brake dust).
3. Check the warranty for the finish. American Racing will not warranty the finish on their polished wheels (I've found out the hard way).
4. As far as waxing, wax both the polished and chrome wheels. The polished absolutely must have it, with the chrome it adds to depth and durability of the shine.

The bottom line: I'm trying to sell my 1-year old American Racing polished aluminum wheels and replace them with the chrome.

Hope this info helps you make your decision. Email me if you have questions.

I love my polished Boyd Coddingtons, but they are
a pain to clean. The best way that I have found is
a soft brush with lots of soap and lather. After
drying with a soft towel, I spray them with
Mother's Wax, or Eagle One Spray, then polish.
I think they look pretty good with a black truck.

I dunno, that is one thing I can't make my mind up about. I found a good deal on some, but I really like the smooth sides of my truck.

There a gorgeous black R/T CC running around here with polished alloys and the flares really look great IMHO. The damn thing is never sitting still enough for me to get a good look at the rims or a pic. He passed me on the road the other day and did it sound nice. I'll have to hunt him/her down some day and see how it's setup.

Nice truck Leslie. Just one thing though. A nice cowl hood or something would look really nice too. But very nice. Are you as good lookin as your truck?

I have found that the best method for making mine look new again is dishsoap, a sponge and water, then IMMEDIATELY polish with a fluffy towel before they can get water spots.

I haven't thought of a cowl hood... yet.

No, the truck is better looking by far.

Joe, are the wheels clear coated? If so, the mothers polish will cloud that a bit.

I use mothers on my AR's and they polish up pretty good. Also be sure to use very soft cloths for polishing, some of the terry towels at parts stores are too coarse/rough for good polishing. I wash all my waxing/polishing towels and cloths in hot water and use fabric softener to really soften them up.

From my experience I would have to say go with polished aluminum. I learned the hard way with chrome. First off, I had chrome steel wheels on my truck and would always have to keep them polished because they would start to develop rust spots if they weren't......so I traded them for some polished aluminum rims so I wouldn't have to worry about rust....well I got tired of polishing them, so I thought buying chrome aluminum rims was the ultimate answer......WRONG! No rust and no polishing? Maybe so but after just 6 months the chrome started to bubble and peel from the wheel. These were American Racing Baja wheels and luckily they had a 2 year warranty on the chrome so they sent me new wheels but I insisted they send me the polished version of the Baja instead of the chrome. They are now on my truck and I couldn't be happier knowing that they will never peel and flake. Quite an expensive lesson but at least now I know the facts. Even if they get dull, dirty or even scratched they will always polish back up nice with a little elbow grease and effort which to me is well worth it. If you scratch the chrome....forget about it! So I would say a polished aluminum rim is the best compromise in the custom wheel world.....no rust, no peeling, just a little polish every once in a while and you are good to go! By the way to all of you with Ram 4x4's out there......I recommend the BF Goodrich all terrain tire mounted on 17x8 American Racing polished Baja wheels.....nice classic 4x4 look which is a nice break from the low profile, bling bling look that has unfortunatly recently swept the truck world.

I have AR baja in polished aluminum. IF they go more than 2-3 weeks without a wash, which happens often, the dirt and brake dust gets baked in and it takes lots of scrubbing, brushing, and aggressive cleaning to get them shiny again. Be careful which chemicals you use. If you go for wheel cleaners and don't use one formulated to be safe for all wheels, you will stain polished aluminum. If you use tire spray becareful to hose and rinse the wheels immediately after otherwise it will stain them. Polished aluminum doesn't rust through but you'll see tiny oxidation spots that you'll have to get rid of.

Chrome rusts and if it chips you can't repair it, but it takes extreme conditions to permanently damage chrome. On the other hand under normal circumstances chrome is easily cleanable with a quick wipe and spray, not the hours of scrubbing polished aluminum provides.

I'd say if you live in an area that's particularly bad for road salt and snow, go with polished aluminum. If you live in a warm climate or one with very light snow, go with chrome. Just rinse them frequently in the winter and get a good coat of wax on them before the colder months.

By the way... the waxing as someone else said is useful to put on a protective coating. And also as someone else said, look at that the polished aluminum is coated with. Naked polished aluminum is the worst to maintain. Clearcoated or teflon coated, you gotta research to find out how the coat it and how they warranty the finish to see what's most likely to hold up.
