Subject: Lowered Dak's on 20's/22's, I got ?'s

Alright guys, I got a 3"/5" drop on my 1999 Dakota R/T right now using 3" control arms and hangers/blocks. If i have my factory R/T rims on with the factory tire (255/55-17) it rubs like a bitch when i hit hills and big bumps!

I went to Tire Barn today and got a quote on some 20's. I am afraid they are rub also. The guy at Tire Barn said i need a 255/35-20 size tire with the 20's if i dont want it to rub. Well, i saw some nice tires that are 275/45-20 for really cheap. Will those rub? I dont know the difference between a 255 and a 275. Can someone help me?

And also, if anyone has any nice pictures of their Dakota layin' on some 20's or 22's, post them for me if u could. Thanks,
-Matt

Matt, the first number for the tires (255, 275, etc.) stands for the width (measured in millimeters, I believe). The second number stands for the height of the sidewall, and I believe its measured in percentage of the width (like 55% of 255). Thus, the 275/45 would be both wider and taller than the 255/30. If you're rubbing badly with the stock rims/tires, I'd put money on you rubbing much worse on 20's with 275/45 tires, since the tire height will be almost the same height as your stockers. Thus, you're basically putting yourself an inch and a half closer to the fender. The 255/30 tires are probably the way to go, as you will probably end up with an overall diameter close to that of your stock rims/tires.

Hope this helps, and someone correct me if I'm wrong about the tire measurements.

Derek

do not get the 275/45/20 tires, i have those on a 2/3 drop and it rubs on bumps and stuff so it wouldnt work on a 3/5 drop, especially if ur complaining about the rubbing now

same here man. don't do it. you're goin to regret it if it's not done right. Hopefully the first time. I had the same debate, the 275-45-20's are cheep compared to the 40 or 35 series. but spend the money!
