Subject: steel cowl or fiberglass? IP: Logged
Message: Help me out people,
I can't decide what would be best for me...besides the weight reduction, is it easier/cheaper to have steel or fiberglass painted? what has more durability, etc.
thanks in advance

Message: Personally I have steel - love it,,but not really sure if there is a quality difference.
Now,,,I've been told by more than one paint shop that metal takes paint better..... ?... That fiberglass will sometimes have 'ripples' across it that you can see when it's painted. - Now that's just what I've been told by some paint shops,,I've never seen it,,but I like telling people that my truck is ALL Steel.

Message: hey jag, u must have read it wrong, i did the first time i looked at thier hoods. the fiberglass version comes with the gel coat that has to be painted. but the carbon fiber version doesnt have to be painted at all which will save u money. also it will go along nicely with the front carbon fiber bumper that is comming out soon (60 less lbs) and also with the APC carbon fiber super sport mirrors ( i have these but in black) anyways, elite customs is running a great deal, the cowl fiberglass hood with the functional sealed airbox for 474 plus SH, plus around 100 to get painted, their carbon fiber hood w/o the airbox is around 699

Message: lol im just messin with u guys but seriously, will carbon fiber take paint? cause i want my truck to be 1 color. and if so, how will it come out? i like the weight reduction but if the finish is gonna be crappy, i dont wanna be bothered. also, i heard fiberglass can shake at high speeds and my friend got a fiberglass cowl hood for his mustang and it shook like crazy at 70mph and eventualy it developed a small crack.

Message: Carbon Fiber will take paint, just takes a whole lot more prep and paint = more $
i'm more than likely gonna go with elite's fiberglass...i'm just wary of the local shops here, cuz if the paint id a bad job, then there will be these ugly ripples...
