Subject: Bedliner w/ Cover IP: Logged
Message: When I bought my Dakota it came with a Duraline in it that comes up over the sides of the bed and is secured down by 3 screws on either side. Now my question is since I want to buy a soft tonneau cover will installation be a problem with this bedliner in?

Message: Yeah you'll have a problem. The previous replies are right on, spray in liners are the best, if you can afford them. They weren't a financially viable option for me when I bought my truck. Instead, I had to get the dealer to throw in a liner as part of the purchase. He was really anxious and willing to give me one of those over the rail Duraline jobs you described...not knowing any better, I agreed. Then I started shopping for an aftermarket tonneau cover on the internet. Well, any cover you buy will require "modifications" (cutting or drilling holes) to the liner so the tonneau frame can clamp onto the truck. I found that Extang and Downey provided the easiest installation (note: I bought the Extang Blackmax cover for $172.80 including shipping at www.truckxpressions.com) Extang has a great warranty and reputation, and that price is about $60 less than most places, with shipping usually adding another $20. Extang also gives instructions on how to modify your liner.
Learning the disadvantages of the liner, I went back to the dealer and worked out a deal to switch it out for a Mopar under rail liner. This took some whining, but I argued that I wasn't given an option between over/under rail liners, and felt like they gave me the cheapest product because I didn't know any better. Luckily, the parts mgr had a grudge against the sales guy, so he admitted that dealers push those Duraliners on customers regularly, because they're cheaper and not as convenient as the Mopar under rail (has a Dodge Ram head logo on it). Of course, he also recommended the spray in liner as the best option, for $450. Note: the under rail liners (also called pop in or drop in) also tend to scratch your truck bed, because dirt and debris can work its way into the space between the liner and bed, and the liner will shift and move during driving. You're supposed to clean out that junk regularly. But I can live with that, the liner will always cover any scratches, and maybe the cover will keep some of the stuff out.
Good luck with your problem...bottom line, you can install a cover if you're willing to cut the liner.
