Subject: Removing Decals...

Message:
I want to remove the stock decals from my 2000 Dodge Dakota Sport Club Cab - any suggestions or hints regarding how to do so (never done it before and don't want to ruin the paint!). Thanks...

Do it sooner then later, because there will be a difference in paint color underneath the decals. Wait for a hot day and leave your truck out in the sun for a while. Get a hair dryer a cloth towel and some goofoff. Peal off the stickers as best you can and use the hair dryer to help. Then use goofoff to get the remaining glue

Second question - I bought me truck used and it has a pinstripe on it (appears to be factory) is this also a sticker...I could easily tell be trying to remove it like a sticker but wondering if anyone had any idea if it is indeed a sticker as well...

Same here. Mine pealed off with no problem at all, no glu left behind it was NICE! And you truck will look 100 % better without them. I just removed all my decals and every one except for the dakota came off with no glue left behind. The Dakota was nasty and needed a bottle of goofoff. Also under my Dakota its a little bit different paint color. Mine is a 98 so its been on there for like 3 years or so... But You cant tell unless you look at it just right.

While I didn't remove the dodge logo's, I did remove the dealership stickers placed on my truck. I simply took my truck to a wand-type car wash and blasted the stickers with the wand a a very shallow angle (5-10 degrees), they came right off and didn't leave any glue behind.

Go to an automotive paint supply store and ask for 3-m woodgrain and stripe remover. It comes in an aerosol can. You spray it on, wait 10 minutes and scrape the decal off. You may need to buy a aerosol can of 3-m adhesive remover too. It will not harm your paint. I have used it many times with great results.

Justin,
I just used a heat gun and about a bottle and a half of goo gone in order to get the DAKOTA SLT hard plastic decals, and o yeah a razor blade(Very Carefully), came off pretty easily. Then I used Mequires 3 step process just like Jeff and you can't tell they were there.

ALL REAL PAINT SUPPLY STORES CARRY A DECAL ERASER WHEEL FOR AROUND $20 AND IT DOESN'T REQUIRE HEAT OR NASTY CHEMICALS THAT WILL ETCH YOUR PAINT (the 3M woodgrain stuff is very missy and can blister older paint). IT IS SIMPLY AN ERASER THAT ATTACHES TO A DRILL CHUCK AND RUBS THE DECAL OFF AT A LOW RATE OF SPEED. ALL THE STICKY GOO STICKS INTO THE ERASER SHAVINGS. I HAVE USED IT TO TAKE OFF 10 YEAR OLD FACTORY GRAPHICS... BUT BEWARE THE COLOR WILL BE OFF ON OLD DARK COLORS!

THE WIFE (OR MOM) WILL BE P.O.ED IF YOU BURN UP THE HAIR DRYER. DO YOUR SELF A FAVOR AND BUY THE 3" DECAL ERASER. A HEAT GUN IS AT LEAST $100 AND LEAVES STICKY GOO TO CLEAN OFF!!!

Use a hair dryer to soften the decal, then use fingernail to lift and peel off decal. WD-40 or any spray lubricant removes all traces of adhesive. Finish off with any good cleaner wax. Even vehicles older than 2 years that have clear coat will color match in time.

I used nail polish remover WITHOUT ACETONE to remove the residue. It's under $2 at WalMart. No marks, no shadows on my black 97. And, you can use the rest on your toes. Or whatever.

I used the eraser wheel and I was amazed, I thought it was going to mess up my paint but was assured it wouldn't. That is definitely the way to go. Infact I'm about to have to do it again, after removing the red factory letters I had them drawn up again in whit and it looked so sweet on my black truck, but I didn't take my time and put them on right and it's kind of messed up.

DO NOT DO THIS!!!!! I feel like such a HACK!!!!! I just took a razorblade and skived the decal off CARFULLY!!!.... then took carb cleaner and removed the sticky stuff. then took 3M rubbing compound to the area to kindof blend the paint underneath to the sun beaten paint (mines a 98!)
This is the worst part!!! It looks great!
DO NOT DO THIS AT HOME!!!!
I think I was only lucky 6... maybe 7 times :)
I don't know if I should be proud or ashamed

OK, Now that I posted earlier, someone is gonna take a razorblade to there stuff.
I told someone at work what I had done once. I guess they had to find out for themself and started skiving up thier paint too!! I felt soo bad that I helped him paint his front fender again. That was like $120 dollars worth of paint and at least 3 days worth of work
Dont use a razorblade unless you really good with one or repainting
P.S. the fender looked better than the rest of the car soooo guess what he suggested........

As far as the razorblade. You can get plastic blades for the flate scraper. I used it and no prob. Still need to be carefull but not as carefull as metal blades. If you have two tone paint now the decals are gone you could always buy diff. color decales to match your details. A friend of mine has a blk 2000 sport. He used blk decals. A diff look but looks great. I put on a blue on my blk 2001 sport. Yet sometimes I wish I never put the on when I see pics of Daks without them.

Thank, Brian

no on the wd 40, I tried it, just makes a mess.

use goof off, or goo gone, available at kmart or
auto part stores, I had my girlfriend pick and
peel, cause she had the nails...its
painstaking, but worth it, do it before there is
too much oxidation in the paint from sitting in
the sun.

Best thing to use is the eraser wheel for the drill. Second best is heat gun or hair dryer followed by high quality decal remover to get the glue residue. Do not use any kind of scraper or blade unless you want to repaint your truck. You may need to rub out your truck with a fine polish afterwards to get all the paint to match. I have removed decals from my vehicles since the mid 70's so I have plenty of experience in this and have seen alot messed up paint jobs from people that thought they were good with a razor blade.

I HAVE A 2000 SPORT AND DID NOT LIKE THE DECALS ON THE SIDES OR THE TAILGATE. I HAD THEM REMOVED AT A BODY SHOP A WEEK AFTER I GOT THE TRUCK AND IT LEFT NO MARK. I DID HOWEVER WANT TO REPLACE THEM WITH THE CHROME PLASTIC TYPE FOUND ON THE SLT MODELS. WHAT I DID WAS .... GOT JUST THE "DAKOTA" IN THE SLT CHROME STYLE LETTERS FOR THE DOORS AND ... (FOR ALL OF YOU SLT OWNERS WHO DON'T LIKE YOUR TAILGATE LETTERS) GOT THE "DODGE" AND THE "4X4" FROM THE DEALER FOR THE DURANGO TAILGATE. THE SIZE AND STYLE LETTERS MATCH PERFECTLY AND LOOK BETTER THAN STICKERS. A NICE CLEAN/SIMPLE LOOK THAT STILL IDENTIFIES.
