Subject: installing underbody neon lights IP: Logged
Message: I am putting on some underbody neon tubes and I dont have any particular mounting kit. First I was just using ties to strap them to the side of the frame on each side. The bad thing is you can see the tube when mounted like this. Has anyone mounted theirs on the backside of the under edge of the body below the doors? Any other ideas as to mounting these things? Any help would be apprecitated thanks.
PS: I know alot of you people dont like these kits but i think they are pretty cool and its MY truck so back off.

Message: I mounted mine with zip ties. Found what ever I could to strap them to, and it works fine. Have had them on since Aug., no broken bulbs, and they dont move. One word of advice, tighten then slowly, you could easily snap a bulb by overtightening.

Message: Mime are bolted to the underside, just below the doors. They are so close to the edge however they are not seen. I dont like it when the tubes are in plain view. All of mime are hidden. The rear one is mounted on my roll pan just below the tailgate but just above the dual exhaust pipes. I made custum brackets to attach the front tube inside the lower valence. That was tricky but it came out real nice. I feel i'm pretty good at this and other electrical needs. I put these kits on for friends all the time, so just let me know if you have any questions.

Message: OK..thanks alot for your help
I used zip ties too and first strapped them to the sides of the frame using holes already there. Now I am going to try putting them under the door inside the body so they wont be visible. I put the back one hidden on the back edge of the hitch and am still working on some kind of frame like Stepdogg was talking about for the front

Message: I zip-tied my side tubes to the rubber grommets along the inside of the rocker panels. Just put one zip-tie around the inner flange of the grommet, and the second through that and around the tube.
Haven't had any problems yet, after about 3000 miles.

Message: Zip-ties are just as secure if you do it right, don't leave holes in the truck, and are much faster and easier.
And it only looks ghetto if you're so lazy you don't trim the excess.

Message: hmm...not leaving holes is a good point...but what about the flexability that a normal mount gives you? how often do bulbs break with the ties? cuz they are gonna bounce some...

Message: There's gonna be some bounce anyway. The regular mounting kits have these plastic loops with a single hole to put the screw through. It's really not all that much different, except for the screw.
I had neons on my old truck for over a year, and they never broke. The only thing you really have to worry about is the inner tube, because the outer one (in quality kits) is made of Lexan, which is nearly unbreakable.
Umm....needless to say, underbody kits and offroading don't mix well.

Message: Has anybody tried putting neons in the wheel wells? I have seen pics of other trucks were they have underbody's and lights in the wheel wells as well.
also can the streetglow neons found at a store like advanced, autozone , or pepboys that say interior accents be used outside? also it looks like it would be easy to mount neons for the back wheel wells just above the fender flare on the inside but were would I mount them in the front? theres not really a lip to hide the bulb to keep it from being seen.
heres an example below. she states she used 10 inch tubes but I can't find any that are for exterior use.

example above. they must be pretty durible if you look at her offroading pics.

Grille guard, roll bar, 2000 spotlights and chrome taillight guards? Gotta be lifted at least 12 inches, too.....
Can we say redneck?
Tell you what--how about I do what I want to with my truck, you do what you want to with yours, and we stay out of each other's business? Sound like a plan?

Message: to the lights.
think of it like playing with a garden hose when the switch is off the hose is kinked so no water is coming out the end(water beeing the neons turned on) but when unkinked whater comes from the faucet(battery) and flows out the end. the switch breaks the connection to the battery when off and then reconnects it when on.
