Message: I want to paint the driveshaft on my 2001 and i
want to know if there is any chance of ruining
the balance by removing and reinstalling it. As
long as i mark the rear bolts and line them in
the same holeswill it still be balanced? The
front is a standard axle shaft right so there is
no need to mark it, right.

Message: To be safe if you want mark the front and the rear of the shaft. If you think about it,really the shaft is balanced out of the vehicle so really it doesn't matter if you mark it or now.If you dropped you shaft(which I did in my race car)and had one custom made it would be balanced at the shop and then you would put it in your vehicle.

Message: Just to let anyone who may be thinking of doing this job. Be sure the rear of the truck is a good 8 inches in the air to avoid loosing any transmission fluid. Just a heads up from my mechanic.

Message: you don't have to worry about balance on the driveshaft or putting it in the same slots as you took them out of.... all you have to worry about it fluid leaking out of the output shaft of the trans and if it's a crummy paintjob with uneven paint etc. if you sandblast NOT GRIND the shaft and DON'T take the balance weight off it then u'll be fine.... nothing to worry about

Message: Why bother with removing it? I painted mine while it was still on the truck. I just jacked it up, put some jack stands under the axle, and prepped the surface with a wire wheel grinder. Then I painted it with some silver rust-oleum paint. I applied it with a foam brush. I put the truck in neutral and rotated the rear wheel to get all the way around the shaft. It has been through one winter now, and it still looks fresh.

Message: Wouldn't the weight of the paint throw off the balance? I mean the paint has to weight at least 2 lbs minimum if you put it in a large sump. 2 lbs difference on a shaft is alot, but if it doesn't vibrate I suppose it's ok

Message: I don't think i'd dare paint my driveshaft....the kind of use my truck sees, i doubt the paint would stay on for long....and, maybe it's just me, but who looks for a painted driveshaft?? ;)
not tryin to offend, just my $.02

Message: Did you have a steel drive shaft made for it?If not and you're looking for something dramatic , polish the aluminum shaft and coat it with something like Nylac, that would look pretty cool.

Message: I am going to prep it and spray it with a light coat of aluminum rust paint. 2lbs?!?! shyt dont use that much paint on a whole vehicle. Might as well paint it up before it rusts. Some people like details...

Message: I painted my driveshaft with POR-15 gloss black. Did the rear axle, drums, and backing plates, too. Yeah, some people like details. It looks good now. We'll see what a salty winter in Maine does to it.
