Subject: Bumper covers IP: Logged
Message: OK After seeing all the beautiful daks with bumper covers, I may want to install in the springtime. I just had a few questions:
1. These replace the plastic fascia? Is this hard to do? What are the steps?
2. How do I mount the stock fog lamps? And the license plate holder?
3. On the stock cover, Is the bumper the flat black part? and the plastic fascia below that? (I have a Sport) (Xenon talks about a lower valence adn a separate bimper cover, if you have a SLT).
4. How would the Xenon, Street Scene or Stillen look on a non lowered Dak? How much lower are the after bumper covers?
Well that's it for now. Thanks in advance.

Message: Yes the black is the actual steel bumper. The bottom is a plastic/poly valance. I am not sure how the fog lights disassemble. I would also like to order a bumper cover for my non lowered(yet) Dakota. I think I am going to go with the Stillen. I have a Xenon roll pan and dont really like the look of their bumper cover. Cool thing about a bumper cover is that us with non R/T's can hide the non R/T look. I already have the factory flares put on, R/T wheels coming, then with the bumper cover I will finally hide the black unmatching front bumper.

Message: 1. Yes the plastic facia must be removed. The Bumper can stay. Mine covered the bumper.
2. I made angle brackets from the bumper brackets to the openings for the fog lights to be mounted. There is no allowance for running a front license plate. You would have to drill the new bumper cover or go without a plate.
3. On a sport the bumper is flat black and the gray plastic is the lower fascia or valence.
4. The street scene is not any lower than the original. It looks a little lower because it drops straight down while the factory valence curves under. I think they look great on any height Dak.

Message: Excuse my ignorance, but I am right that the Street Scene bumper cover comes with no bumper? The reason I ask is I recently got in a collision which destroyed my front end and I'm trying to get insurance to pay for this. Can you order just the stock bumper with no valence? I was also wondering if anyone has found the chrome speed grille inserts for the Street Scene valence, I can only find the brushed, even on the Street Scene website.

Message: Mark,
That is one sweet Dak. How much did you pay for your SS bumper cover? I was also looking at Stillen's bumper cover. Advantages are the ease of installation and fog lights are in the stock cover. Stillen goes right over the stock cover. Disadvantage is the increased weight of adding a cover vs replacing. Was it hard taking off the cover and/or bumper? Another question. Is your QC at stock height or lowered? Maybe soon my dak will look as nice as yours. Thanks for all the info.

Message: Thanks NJ.
I got my cover 'special' from a friend that had it on a show truck. He was changing up the look and had removed it. The covers run about $300+ on the net. I've seen them several places.
My Dak is lowered 2/3 with the Hotchkis kit. The lower valence comes off easy. However I had the shop that painted the cover install it. I didn't want the risk of scratching it. It's quite large and unwieldy. With 2 or 3 people it's probably not difficult.
Top Dogg - it covers the bumper, if your bumper was damaged you will still need to buy a new bumper.

Message: They are a pain to install on the 2001s and up. Because the truck already has a bumper cover the upper and lower part are one part. when you take that off you do not have a full bumper like on the pre 2001s it is just a push bumper and it do4s not go all the way around the sides. I called SS and stillen and they did not know they changed and told me it would not work. The fog lights also mount different than pre 2001s I had to use sheet metal screws inside the fenderrs to hold it on and still it is loose because the bumper does not fill up the cover. My advice would be to leave the stock rfront on and just cust the lower vert bars out so you don't see them and install the cover over it. If you have a SLT them you have no problem. I an really thinking about taking mine oss cause it just does not fit right and it rubs the tires

You can get it shipped to your door for about $100. A good deal for a quality bumper.

Message: Hi Chris,
Now I'm really confused. I am trying to find out the install procedures for one of theses bumper covers. I called Stillen and they said I need to remove the stock plastic cover and install the Stillen cover over the bumper with some screws and double stick tape. Is this hard to do? Or does the Stillen cover go over the stock plastic cover? Would this line up correctly with the fog lights? Mark said he removed his stock plastic cover and installed his cover.
Do I install the Stillen or SS cover over the stock plastic cover? Would this not work? Stillen also said that their cover doesn't work with a license plate holder which I need in NJ. How can I remedy that. Maybe I should just get a body shop to do the install after they paint the cover. I thought I can save a little dough.
BTW Nice looking Dak. Is yours lowered? I am trying to image what my QC would look like at stock height and the Stillen cover on it. I read that you are not that happy with your cover and it rubs the tires. I have the stock 255/65x16 tires. Would installing the Stillen over stock alleviate that problem?
Thanks for chiming in. I'm trying to gather all relevant information.

Message: So what does it entail removing the stock plastic lower valence? As much I can see the top cover(just below the headlights) and the lower valence (holding the fog lights) seem to be one piece. Is this called the lower valence? In the service manual, it doesn't show the distinction bewteen the lower and upper valence and the bumper. I got of guessed that the bumper is steel just behind the plastic cover.
Refering back to Chris's reply, the 2001s may not have a full bumper for the Stillen cover to attach to. I wonder if his suggestion of attaching the Stillen cover to the stock plastic will work.
Rob. How did you attach the stock fog lamps?
Again thanks to everyone for their great knowledge and response.

Message: Chris,
I haven't heard from you and I'm sorry to bother you with all these questions. I think it is the engineer in me. Have you tried to install the Stillen bumper cover over the stock plastic valence? I see what you mean regaring the Sport having top bumper cover and lower valence as one piece. I couldn't see if the actual bumper as being a push bumper and not a full one.
Has anyone installed the Stillen cover over the stock cover and have everything line up? I would see Chris's point to make the Stillen fit better and resolve the fog light issue.
I really appreciate everyone insight and this would really help relieve the fears of spending $280 for the cover and paying approximately $400 to paint the cover and not being able to return it.
Thanks everyone for your help!!!!!!

I have a SLT.All I had to do was remove the lower valance then slide the cover over the bumper.I can remove and reinstall the whole thing in five minutes
I mounted my fog light s of of the buper itself under the cover. Then the cover slides up to them.
I just used a couple of pieces of flat bar bolted one end to the buper through wholes that were already there when you remove the valance. Then bolted the light through the other end.
The hardest part is removing the stock valance.

Message: I've got an '02 R/T, and the Stillen just slipped over the top of the bumper and valance (tight fit), secured with original screw bolts inside the front wheelwell, and double stick tape on the valance. Very easy with 2 people doing it. I thought the R/T and SLT bumpers were the same (but not sure) except for paint. If so, it couldn't be any easier.
I also bought the billet grill for the lower valance, then found out I couldn't use it because the oil cooler fittings only leave about 1/2" of clearance. Not near enough room. Haven't found anything that would fit and look decent, so I'm leaving it open.

Nice looking Dak. I just got my Stillen bumber cover. I did some prefit work (I left the 3 bars in the lower valence). I got to sand and clean the cover so I can get it painted. Hopefully, in a month or two. Roughly, how much did it cost to get the bumper cover painted? Primer? black and clear coat? Thanks.

Message: I had my bumper cover, grill shell, rear spoiler, hood, roll pan and mirrors all painted at the same time at the Dodge dealership paintbooth using factory paint and clear coat for $400. (yea, I knew someone) I would expect it to cost around $150-200 just for the bumper cover. The bumper cover should just need roughing up so the paint will stick, and if you do it yourself, it'll save prep costs. Good Luck!

Message: 2THEXTRM, yes it really is a Stillen bumper cover. In looking at the StreetScene on Marks DQC's above, I can see some differences. The double spoilers on mine are a little bigger, and there's no molded-in line above the lower grill on mine, it's all smooth. The Stillen appears to extend a little lower also, but it's hard to tell just from pics. From a distance, they'd be hard to tell apart.
