Subject: Would you like a Carbon Fiber hood?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi all,

What would you all be willing to pay for a carbon fiber
hood? I have been toying with the idea of making one
for my Dakota (4.7/5-speed/CC/loaded) but based on
reading this an other Dakota groups I don't think the
market would bare the price. I would think we would
need to sell for about $800.00. I bought a new hood
from the dealer over a year ago for the project but have
put it on hold. The second question is: would you want
it stock, smooth or with some type of air intake? The
factory hood weighs 47 pounds our hood would weigh
about 12 and be a direct bolt on replacement. It can be
painted to color match at your local body shop or clear
coated.

We have been making composite and Carbon Fiber
parts for Porsches and more recently BMW's for 17
years.

Let me know what you all think.

Contact me by voice or e-mail if you like but I also
encourage you to post your ideas as well.

Neil

that sounds like a neat idea but the $800 is a little much for a hood. Can yall make a cowl lift off hood that uses hood pins?

I think that'd be a good idea though Cowl hood w/ pins. I wonder how that'd look on my truck.. Either that or something w/ a ram air look to it.

That's about the price of the "shaker Hoods" that I've seen, i believe and they are only fiberglass. It would sell better with some type of intkes openings and style. IMO

How strong would the carbon fiber hood be ? Would I have to worry about it shattering or cracking if it gets bumped or hit ?Also will you be making hoods for GEN II as well as GEN III ?

bryan, if carbonfiber was not strong, i highly doubt that makers such as saleen, lamborgini, and ferrari, and mclaren would make entire cars out of the stuff.

Carbon fiber is strong. They make the rear end tubes in race cars out of it. Much more light weight.

Indeed $800 is a good deal of money. This is why I
posted the topic to get your feedback on if there is a
market for a hood of our quality. Because we build parts
for Porsche and BMW there is no room for so so parts.
Those company’s who have done well in the Honda et
al market don’t make the crossover well to the high end
German after market because here quality is king.

Because I am the parts designer for the company and I
also own a Dakota I can make about any style hood we
can think of. I my self would like a flat race hood but
would also build an air intake system if that is what the
market wanted. As far as cowl hood, it may be hard to
talk me into that one and I may be missing something
here but why would you want a pin release design?

TO: Knobbyman

Again with the pin design. What am I missing here?
Ram air look, now I get that.

TO: howdy

The shaker hood is a nice design. I have not seen one
up close but thru pictures it dose seem like a good
choice.

If I end up making a hood for the Dakota I don’t think I
will go the two part route. The air intake if included at all
will likely be molded into the hood.

TO: kota on 20’s

I live in Orange County and commute to Riverside for
work. As the sign says in my home town of Tustin “Work
where you must but shop and play in Tustin”

TO: Impact Dak

Sweet it would be, but not from me. Those who build
the Shaker hood have surly spent countless hours in
RD. Whatever comes out of Getty Design has always
been a direct bolt on replacement of a factory part or a
modified version to meet a specific need of our race
and street customers.

TO: Bryan

Composite parts be it fiberglass, carbon fiber of even
plywood can be made with different mechanical
properties depending on your needs. Because a hood
needs to be stiff we use a proprietary foam core within
the composite matrix. You could put a 50 pound weight
on one of our hoods with less than a 1/4 inch of
deflection. Like any auto body part be it steel, carbon or
plastic if you run into something you are going to brake
the part.

TO: kota on 20’s

It’s real.

cowl induction would be cool. but I dont think
losing a few pounds off of these 4000lb trucks
would do much. would look baddass on a

Neil,

i am interested in a lift off hood that weighs close to nothing. I use to have a cowl induction hood (but it was steel) and really liked it but i want something lighter. I also wouldnt mind a plan stock looking hood but i never cared for ram air hoods on dakotas....

Update from Getty Design

Message:
Hi all,

Here is a link to a concept picture I did over a year ago.
I got snowed in at my cabin and had a little fun with
photoshop. The base image is of Jack Yates RT. This is
the type of air intake I could graft onto the hood and still
keep the price at $800.00. It would be a one peice hood
with a cut out for the air intake. I will also be able to
include an aluiminum grill screen.

This link is only valid until Sept. 30 so you may want to

ViperTruckFlames.jpg

The main Gettydesign.com site should have a concept
section soon and I will repost this and other images
with ready.

Thanks, Neil
