Subject: Painting Mud Flaps
IP: Logged

Message:
I just put a set of Mopar mud flaps all the way around on my Daktoa. It says they are paintable (plastic) and I want to paint them to match the gloss finish of the truck (black). It says to sand with 320 grit paper, then apply a "flexible primer-bonding" material and then paint with a "flexible paint". Will Duplicolor work or do I need something from the dealership? Anybody done this? Tips on painting these so they won't chip and peel in two weeks? Any help would be appreciated.

I wanted to paint a set on the wifes Concorde, went to a Sherwin Williams Auto Paint Store and once I got the price for a pint of color matched paint, thinner and a flex additive which you need for plastic, I walked out, don't remember the exact price but it was close to $50.00 and that was just for the material.

i was goin to paint my mud flaps when i first got them...but the body shop told me that it was goin to be a waist of money...seein that the paint is goin to chip off if it gets hit with a pebble no matter what kind of paint u use. This was just what i was told.

If I do paint them, it won't be until after winter. Have either of you guys had any problems with your fender flares getting torn up because of the mud flaps? Other have told me that their fender flares get destroyed by these things.

I have them on my 02 Dak and last week while backing up the right side flap got caught in a police type stell barricade that was laying sideways on the ground and the flap got tangled in the legs and pulled the flap off when I went forward, it came off clean, the fasteners released and did no damage to the fender flare, but I now have a scrape on the under side of my bumper, then I found out from the dealer that you cannot buy just one flap, so I now have a spare left side rear flap.

I live in Canada and we get a harsh winter up here but my painted mudflaps have lasted. Krylon Fusion works well on plastics and only costs around $10 at Walmart. You might need to do some touch-up application come summer but thats about it. No need to spend $50 at the Sherwin Williams store!!!
