Subject: Tow Hook Placement? IP: Logged
Message: I just ordered a set of tow hooks for my gen 2 dakota, then i went home and looked under there & realized I'm not sure where i'm gonna put them, there are holes in the frame, but they seem really far back for tow hooks. Anyone else had this problem? How'd you fix it? These are for the front end, just in case i was confusing anyone.

Message: I was just outside lookin again, and on both sides of the license plate there are slots that the tow hooks would fit perfectly into. Looking through the slots, it looks like there is a solid piece of the frame right there, and the brackets for the plastic trim are screwed into this same piece of metal. So...anyone else done this, Or is that not the frame & something I don't want to drill into? Please give me an idea here, the hooks should be arriving tomorrow afternoon.

Message: I'll take some pics when I get them installed, then i'll email the pics to whoever wants them. I'm in the Sioux Falls area, and that reminds me, are there any designated off-roading areas in this state? I can't find jack squat on the state parks page.

Message: Guess what, the truck parts distributor sent the wrong dang parts, i ended up with a 17 foot tow rope, so we sent that back and my hooks should be in by saturday at the earliest.
Well, that slot in the trim isn't gonna work, that piece of metal isn't sturdy enough at all, it moves when i push on it. Soooo.....i took the plastic trim off tonite and i'm just gonna drill & bolt the hooks to the bottom of the frame rails. Then I'll see if that trim piece is still gonna be in the way, or if i can feed the tow rope straight through that slot when i need to. It looks kinda goofy without that trim, there are 2 metal brackets that stick out, they do nothing except keep the plastic trim from buckling inward while driving. I'm not sure what to do with those yet, i'm thinking possible fog light mounting location, but not sure yet. I'll keep ya posted on my progress.

Message: There was a design for drop down (and forward) brackets for front tow hooks setup going around in this forum 2-3 months back.
This solved (homemade) the problem of the frame anchors being way back and up from the openings in the plastic valence of the bumper.
As for load capacity, your guess is as good as mine. Original mentionned tickness was 1/4 to 3/8 steel.
From top of head, check for Ayrows and Knobbyman.
