Dude , your in for some fun!
I put in a remote starter with lock/unlock. I allready had power door locks and windows. I could get the thing to start , but after 13 hours , I could'nt get the door locks to work! I have put in car stereos , multi-amp systems with relays mind you , and this had me stumped! I went to a car stereo shop , and they did it for me for around $25. Buy the parts and let them do it , save yourself the headache.

Yes... it is very possible to convert from manual to aftermarket windows and doors...

I too have a Dak with manual windows and doors, however when I had an alarm installed (a Viper 550E) at Circuit City, I had them also install door actuators and a switch to give me powered door locks which would work both as stand alone power doors and with automatic locking when the alarm activated (It also locks my doors for me when I start the engine as a saftey feature/bonus and unlocks the doors when you switch the engine off).

The alarm cost me $399, however the actuators were $60 each and the labor to add them was about $30 for a total of $150.

Now power windows can also be done, but it is gonna cost you more money than the power doors. First of all, you have to buy aftermarket window motors which can run you about $250 then you have to have them installed for about another $75 (I think).

Personally, I only did the door locks... since I figure that when passengers get in and out of the truck, it is more important to be able to lock the doors versus rolling the windows up and down (although that would be nice too...)

Hopefully, this information will help you to make a decision...

On a door which is set up for manual locks and windows?.........If yes then how does that process work.

Thanks, Darkfury. I think i will have to go the way you did and stay with just the door locks. At least for now. I was also wondering if I did get the power windows, what would happen to the existing cranks and their holes?

Well to make it look right, you would probably have to get new door panels (very costly).

I don't know if there are plugs that would cover the holes properly. But I say... if you wanted power doors, Ya probably shoulda gotten that way when you bought it... j/k

In my case, I bought used, and the "original" owner I guess had a distrust of power locks and doors, however my truck had everything else. And for the price, I couldn't pass it up.

Good luck dude...

UPDATE: I have finally gone and had "power windows" installed in my Dak...

I guess I just got tired of reaching over to roll the passenger window up and down.

The "aftermarket kit" that I was talking about in a previous post was made by "SPAL". They are an Italian company who makes several aftermarket parts for many cars.

The way that this kit works is that it has a motor that mounts on the lower part of your door (under the window lift) and a gear drive that attaches to your factory window crankshaft (with the crank handle removed) using custom gear rings that fit over the crank gears that your handle crank used to fit over.

To "hide" the crankshaft and the hole in your door panel, the kit comes with special backend spacers and these special "cups" that cover the hole.

All in all... it looks very much like a "factory" install once it is complete. I may have to put some pictures up of it one day on my website (if anyone is interested in what they look like).

The cost of this conversion was approximately $350 and took about 4 hours to complete.

Darkfury, hows that new bumper holding up.
Did you have the power windows installed professionally or did you do it yourself, I'm about to install an alarm and power door and windows on my dak and I was wondering if it was an easy install.

The bumper is great! Thanks!

I had the power windows professionally installed, however just watching him do it... I could tell that it wasn't overly complicated (if you are cool with working inside of your doors)

Personally, I always leave stuff like this to the pros since they have the tools to do it. The hardest part that I saw was running the electrical switches to work with the factory lighting system. Personally, I wouldn't want to mess with that stuff.

All in all... it looks really good. I'll definitely have to get some pictures up sometime later.

Because the switches had "internal lights"... they "glow" in the dark so you can see where they are.

Not to knock the effort, but honestly you are gonna have more hassles and cost trying to get some "junkyard doors".

First of all, not too many late model Daks and Durangos are "totaled out" in the first place.

Second, if it was totaled out, then you would have to hope that it was a front or rear collision so that you could get the entire door... since the internal workings of a "factory" power window door are a lil bit different than the internal workings of a manual window crank door.

Third, if you are lucky enough to score a junkyard door in good condition, then you would have to just worry about whether or not everything is gonna "work right" since your truck was not originally set up to accomodate factory "power windows".

BTW, I had previously asked the dealer about having factory motors installed and their "short answer" was... "it could be done, but at great cost and expense. It would not be worth the effort and they highly recommended against it."

Therefore that's why I went with an aftermarket module... The inner workings of the door are unaffected by using this method (the window crankshaft is still there, however now an internal gear system moves it instead of the window crank handle.

But if you think you can pull off doing it from junkyard parts then go for it... Hopefully it won't be TOO much of a hassle.

POWER WINDOW/LOCK DILEMA, Please help me out here?

Message:
Hi, I have read a few posts here about power windows and locks. I have a 2000 Quad Cab sport 4x4.I bought it new and it was pretty nice, cruise tilt a/c foglights and privacy glass,Bucket seats, console auto trans and 3.55
gears.
Unfortunately I didn't get power windows and locks and since I had already got a bedliner and a cd changer out of the dealer They offered to add power windows locks and keyless entry for $1000.00. I was under the impression they would use mopar parts but once I got the truck back I found out they just pretty much used aftermarket stuff. I guess that I shouldn't complain too much but I tend to be pretty picky about things like that. I never really said anything to the dealer about it because at the time I was like, well as long as it works. I was fairly satisfied other than the switches they used for the windows and that the door locks are central locking which means that when you open or lock or unlock either of the front doors, it unlocks or locks all of them, which I HATE! I would have much rather had a swich operated setup and I have seen them available in jcwhitney and places like that. All in all I guess it wasnt too bad because they mounted the power window switches in the bezels where they would have gone from the factory which was a pretty cool touch I guess. Anway what I'm getting at is I would like to hear from other people who have added aftermarket power windows and locks and maybe see some photos of their swithches and the ins and outs of it all. I am considering getting different switches for the windows and switching to the button activated door locks but I'm not really sure whehter its all worth it or not. I have also considered just trading my Dakota in on another with all those options already. I'd love to hear anybodys thoughts on any of this and please if you've got pics of any type of aftermarket additions, I'd love to see them.

Doing the power locks is not that expensive. All you need is to get a set of aftermarket power lock actuators and your in business if you are connecting the power locks to your vehicle alarm. If you are not and adding switches its a little more difficult. All and all its not hard to do and the better actuators cost around $25 for a set of DEI's, plus relays. On the power windows thing I ordered some from Spal and couldnt install them before deploying to Iraq. I'll attempt them when I return. Jon

I bought a set of universal power locks off of ebay for $20. Installed them myself, wasn't that hard. I got a central locking system, which means that if you operate one of the locks, both operate. There are no switches. I am extremely pleased with the results- it works flawlessly with my remote start/keyless entry.

I just bought the deluxe Spal kit (the deluxe is supposed to have a more powerful and quiter motor) and switches on ebay, the install took me about 3 hours taking my time, I got the ones with the pod style switches, the kit has templates for the switch cut outs, I installed mine in the door panel. very satisfied, the only problem the instructions were in Italian but there were enough pictures that the wording was not really necessary.

With that SPAL kit (I found it on Ebay, you are correct), I wonder if you can buy the Dealer / Factory / OEM window switches and just "splice" the window switch wires into the OEM window switches and "plug" the hole that the window crank was in?

Feasible?
