I have a genIII dak , and I have always liked the look of speed grill inserts. I also think they are to expensive. I went to Lowes and got a roll of aluminum gutter guards , 6in x 20ft for about $3.50 . I'm gonna try this tomorrow , unless someone has done this and thinks it looked like crap. Also , if you have done this please let me know how you did. I'll let everyone know how it goes. Later on.

I did that for the bumper inserts rather then get ripped off again by SS. But i did pay for the actual grill inserts and they look great. The bumper inserts are easy because you can use a flat piece of screen

Good luck

What did you do about getting to the hood release? Did you customize a latch?

Becarefull of some grill inserts. I have heard either on this board or another that they can kill performance by reducing the amount of air the engine can draw in. One guy (I think it was an R/T) said he lost several 1/10's the first time he ran with them so he got rid of them and was back up to speed.

I have heard that too, Jeffster. Only with the SS grills though. Regular billet grills don't seem to affect air flow (like mine)

O.K , I've given up after about 3.5 hours. Just couldn't get it to look right. The screen was just a little to hard to work with. I couldn't get all four to look the same , and I don't want it to look like a little kid did it , although there are alot of little kids that could probably do it better than me anyway! I'm sure one of you guys could do it , I just don't have the patience. As for the time and speed reduction , I dont really plan on racing anyway , so I may just break down and get the ss grill , just 'cause they look so good! Some day I plan on getting the shaker hood anyway so hopefully that would negate any performance lost using the ss grill. Thanks for all the feedback guys , thats what makes this site the best!!

What I used was the perforated aluminum sheeting with 7/64 inch diameter holes, about 1/32 of a inch thick. This is the same material used on some screen doors. The sheet was appsoximatly 30x30 iinches and cost around $18. I used light weight cardboard to make a template for the shape of the grill inserts then traced this on the sheeting and trimed to fit,cut out around the hood release lever and used door edge guard to put around the opening your finger goes through. I used black zip ties to install the sheeting to the grill also the material used was black, used what was left to do the bumper. The aluminum is dead soft so it is easy to cut with light weight shears or heave duty scissors.Took about 3 to 4 hours from start to finish and has been on for two years now.

Don't feel bad, I tried it too.. couldn't get it to fit or stay in. I gave up and ordered the real ones =]

As far as the hood release goes, I don't even use the cable POS thing mine came with. I just stick the philips screwdriver on my Leatherman thru a hole to pop the hood. I got pissed putting the little plastic thingys on that hold the cable to the other stuff under the hood (if that makes sense) and never finished it. Besides, I would have to reach behind the lower valance just to get to the handle.

All you have to do is crimp a piece of wire to your latch and run it through the grill then crimp a key ring on it. leave it short so it sits againts the grill and doesnt hang down.
