Subject: 275/55/17 will they work??? NEED HELP.. IP: Logged
Message: O.k. i just got my R/T rims for my 98 dakota sport V6, will the Dunlop sport 5000 tires in 275/55/17 work with my truck or is the front gonna rub? i have 235/75/15 on there now and the diameter is 27.5, the diameter on the Dunlops is 28.9. Can anyone help me out? what does everybody suggest for a good tire at a decent price?

Message: The factory tire size for the 17x9 R/T wheel is 255-55-17. I believe they are 28.15" in diameter, give or take a little bit, and as far as I'm aware they never rub unless you're lowered.
I would imagine the 28.9" tire would be fine.
Many people recommend the Nitto 450 tire (about $145-160 each) for best performance, and the Kumho Ecta-711 (?) is the bang for the buck at $88-115 per tire.

Message: Thanks, I'm glad you like my truck.
A lot of people retain the 255-55-17 size since they seem to be a standard size and are available from many manufacturers with those dimensions.
I've heard of 275-50-17 or even 305-45-17 but you'd have to check with the tire companies to see which brand has those alternate sizes.

Message: Well, its already done guys and thanks for the help but this is what i concluded. i found some used tires in 2 sizes that would fit my truck
a) 275x60x17
&
b) 255x50x17
option a) made my truck look like a monster truck, im talkin tires stickin out at least 2 inches and the rims looked SUPER SMALL on there as well. DEFINITE NO NO... So for 35 bucks a tire with 60-70% of the tread left, i decided to go with option b) and i am almost satisfied. They are the BF Goodrich ZR series tire, really wide and lower profile compared to the stock. I think the original size would be best 255x55x17 but he said they never come in and they are very rare. Overall, I am happy with the look but would prefer to drop it a few inches to make it perfect and make up for some of the space in the wheel well but due to Canada's cold winters, this would not be practical adn i wouldn't be able to fit my winter tires back on so i am gonna leave it as is until the day i can afford the perfect size and brand tire. Thanks for the help...
Bye the way, if anyone in canada has some of these used tires let me know...i would really like the stock tires adn i don't really care about teh wear on them since they are only for summer use.

Message: You are about to/did get a smaller diameter tire. Your diameter will be off and so will your odometer and speedo, but not by much.

Message: yes i know, they are actually 0.9" smaller than what was on before (now my winter tires and rims) which were 235x75x15 but to be honest you really don't notice the difference all that much. The gap is there and would look awesome if i dropped it but it looks much better than the winter rims and tires so i am satisfied. if anyone knows the cheapest way to drop my truck about 1-2 inches in the front and a bit more on the back i may consider if it isn't too expensive.

Message: I have a 2000 4x2 Club Cab that I am going to equip with winter tires. The truck came with 255/75/15 tires, what size would be best to go with for a winter radial. We get quite a bit of snow here in Canada, is it true that skinnier tires sre better for snow driving...215/75/15 too small??

Message: wondering - we will use 275/55/17 for the example. The 275 stands for the section width of the tire measured in millimeters...i.e...the tires width from the inner sidewall to the outer sidewall.
The 55 is used for the sidewall height. It means that the sidewalls height is 55% of the section width. So this tire has a sidewall measuring 275 X 0.55 = 151.25 mm. I hope this helps. If i am wrong will someone please correct me. Thanks.
