Subject: Long Bed or Short Bed?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey everyone...

Maybe this is a dumb question, but I just got my 2002 Dakota Sport 4x4 Club Cab (first pick-up). I want to get a Tonneau cover for it, but I am not sure if it is a long bed or a short bed.

It has a 6.5 ft bed with the gate up. I know that this isn't the shortest...but is it the longest? Which should I choose...long bed or short bed?

I had the same question when I bought my tonneau cover. The 6.5ft bed is considered a short bed, an 8ft bed is a long bed. I dont know what they call the bed on the back of the quad cab dakota.

http://www.onestoptruckshop.com

Extang tonneau covers for $189 plus shipping. Best price I was able to find anywhere.

"Too small", "Trunk", stop you guys are killing me haha. Okay, we are a wee bit shorter but it gets the job done. We just have to do it with the tailgate down! (and maybe some rope)

No Dakota yet, but I have a question about the cargo bed tops (I think that's what they're called... same height as the cab and they cover the bed...) Are they available for Dakotas? For the Quad Cab? I need somewhere to put my dogs when they are wet and smell like.. like dogs...)

Yes, multiple companies make lids for all size Dakota beds.

I have a QC and the bed does remind me of a trunk, but it's alot bigger trunk then I had on my SUV. As a city boy that occasionally need to go get a few trees/bushes, a load of mulch, get an appliance or electronic item from the store, room for all the coolers, chairs and other tailgating needs, etc ... the QC trunk works great.

Enjoy your truck, I just got mine a few months ago and love it.

I have a question regarding bed lengths on late model Dakotas. Is is possible to get the longest (82") bed on a 4x4 Dakota? If not, can you swap from a shorter box (77") to the longer box without too much difficulty?

I got an 04 Quad. Still useful for the same kinds of things I did with my longbed Ranger, only two differences being sometimes the tailgate stays down and I can always have more than just one person in the truck with me now when I haul things. IF I ever really get to missing the bed length Ill get a bed extender. But see now I have the extra width and bed depth, which almost makes up for the length because I often carry wide and tall items but not so much the long stuff.

I was wondering if the reg cab pickups (97-99ish) had more than one option for bed length? if there is a 'long' bed and 'short' bed on reg cabs, how long is the longbed?

For G-d's sake people, READ your owners manual.

A long bed is 8 feet (96")

A STANDARD bed is 6 1/2 feet (78")

A SHORT bed is what's on the QUAD cabs.

The "original" longbed Dakotas had a 10 foot bed.

Petey has a legitimate question, and Mayor79 is absolutely correct.

The difficulty, HELLO?, is when shopping for a tonneau cover, most catalogs for those who either make or rebadge someone else's cover, refer to Dakota model as short bed; not Regular Cab, Club (or Extended) Cab, or Trunk.
Confusion reigns, as no one likes to spend upwards of $200 just to find out if his Dakota is really a short bed, even though its over 6 feet long.

I like the short bed. It has better turning radius.
