Subject: Custom Console IP: Logged
Message: Since I have lifted my truck, and also am angered by the lack of cupholders I decided to make my own console. I know what I want. A big square using the rubber shift boot, two huge cupholders, and then I have left over space in the front. What should I do? I already will have two storage squares like the stock ones, any ideas with a custom flair, fiberglass, neon, plexiglass. I need some suggestions... Pics are good too.
Thanks

Message: The only thing I can suggest for design ideas is to check out the sport truck sites as they have a few pics of custom consoles.
When you have a design in mind, then I recommend using a combination of plywood, bondo and fiberglass to get the final shape you want. If you want drop in cup holders, then visit a local marine shop and get a couple plastic ones. They hold any size drink you can buy in a store and the drinks stay put.
I've done a couple consoles in my Dak, but I don't know if they're what you're looking for or not.
The first one was
and the new one is a new design that incorporates the cup holders in the storage area.

Message: That console is simply amazing. I never thought of Bondo as a substitute. I am planning on carpeting the whole thing, so that should save me some time. Thanks for the picture Chuck.

Message: Hey Tim,
If you remember correctly that was last year's design. Looks I "inspired" your design huh? :-) But don't worry, the one pictured above is sitting in my garage and I have a new design in my Dak now. I got tired of reaching over the coffee cups to shift and wanted to move the cupholders.
kennungesser,
Working with bondo is really easy. It takes a little practice, but mixing and filling is fairly straight forward. The hard part about using bondo is sanding, sanding and sanding. If you want a perfectly smooth surface you'll spend about 5 times as long sanding as you will filling or painting.
The above console was built on a 3/4" plywood "sub-structure", then I fiberglass in the cup holders and then used bondo to smooth everything over before painting. Total time in that console including matching subwoofer box was about 40-50 hours (total guess). That also including the design process of cutting cardboard templates until I was happy with a design.
Thanks,

Message: Thanks Tim. I can't wait to see your Dak at Carlisle. I've been following along a little on the DML and it sounds like you've been doing quite a bit to it.

Message: The chrome switches were for interior/exterior neon and the black switches were for aftermarket electric windows. The blue lights were for exterior light indicators as well as one that turned on when the electric fan came on.

Message: Yes I did Tim. Then I just ran the ground from the light to someplace under the dash (can't remember where). It's cool to see when it comes on and how long it actually stays on for.
