Subject: racing stripes install tips?
IP: Logged

Message:
Well im looking to get some tips for putting racing stripes on my DAK. My brother-in-law bought the stripes (a roll i presume) and i was wondering if anyone here has put them on before and could offer some tips for it.My biggest worry is not getting them to match up correctly (say from hood to roof..etc.) i dont want them to be crooked. Any help will be greatly appreciated

I take it you are using vinyl. I did mine my self, and all you really need will be a yard stick, a couple feet of string, a crayon (to mark the hood), and at least one good eye.
I had my stripes printed off a vinyl plotter, onto a single sheet. The only concern was making sure that the space between the two stripes (the blank area) was perfectly centered. Simply measure the badge on the hood, and make a mark in a couple spots going up the hood w/the crayon. I then cut holes in the paper backing (gets peeled off anyway), and lined her up.
Do a similar process for hood, and use the string to see if it matches. Pretty easy.
Make sure you have some soapy water handy for when you apply the stripes,,,this will allow you to position the stripes after they are on, 'just in case'. The tail gate is the easiest since you can pull it off, and do it inside.
You will probably end up w/bubble that you won't be able to push out,,,don't worry,,,the ones that don't evaporate after a couple of weeks can be popped w/a needle later on.
I had mine for about six months,,and absolutely loved them. Took them off when I got a cowl hood.
I'll be posting some pic.s as soon as I get my truck back manana w/the hood painted. Before & After.

under the stripes ... and don`t use too much soap or the stripes won`t want to stick very well, just a few drops.

Personally, I would go with windex...

Just clean the area thoroughly, dry totally, then apply some windex, a good coat is ok, it will dry faster than the soapy water so use enough so you have time to position to perfection.

If you are confused, use a regular vinyl decal on a window with this process to become familiar with the windex before slapping the stripes on the hood. It is easy if you take your time....

Good Luck!

DO NOT USE WINDEX! It has ammonia and it deteriorate the adhesive on the vinyl. Use two drops (and i mean literally drops) of dish washing liquid sunlight (i think)in a spray bottle. It's sheeting action helps in application... i worked for vinyl professionally for 5 years.
