Subject: Install Xenon 3 piece wing spoiler? IP: Logged
Message: dudes and duddettes,
i'm gonna purchase the Xenon 3 piece wing spoiler. the question is that i have a lining which is over the railing. what kind of problems am i gonna get into and how can i solve it? what kind of glue type can i use so the wings can stay on no matter how sunny or rainy it is? i need something that would take a sledge hammer to take them off. any help is appreciated.
mahalo,
Scotty

Message: Most body kits that I know just req 3M tape and a few mounting points. I wouldn't see why it wouldn't work on a wing. Oviously it has to have SOME hard mounting points to have it to work. The 3M "tacky" tape will keep it in place, trust me! As long as you have a clean surface to mount it against, can't go wrong with it. The hard part is gettin it off without pullin up paint.

Message: The best thing to do w/ that wing is get rid of it. That is the most ugly mod you could do to your truck Please dont do it Please. For dakota owners every where PLEASE PUT THE WING DOWN AND STEP AWAY FROM THE DAKOTA I REPEAT PUT THE WING DOWN AND STEP AWAY FROM THE DAKOTA.Or you could use that stupid 3M tape and go 90mph and watch it fly off w/ you paint

Message: Thanks guys. The wing is a one-piece unit from Cervini's http://www.cervinis.com part #222
It's not attached to the tonneau. It sits on top of the tailgate and extends to the inside, where I have it bolted on with 5 expanding bolt anchors (the Bedrug covers up that part), plus it has the double-stick tape under it. It's been load tested to over 100 mph with no problems, heh heh!

Message: I think 02blackrt's truck looks great with the wing. Notice that the truck was done right with a flat bed cover and roll pan. It would look stupid without the bed cover and with an OEM bumper. I would definately say this truck was done correctly. Great job!

Message: Jesse T., I don't have the dimensions (although I can measure for ya if you really need it). I put on the wing, then took the stock Checkmate cover and put it on to measure with. The only portion that didn't fit the way I wanted was on top of the spoiler. It left too much of a gap on the sides at the rear, because it was sitting too far back on the spoiler. I measured 5/8" to take of the front of the Checkmate (mainly because you wouldn't see that end of it as much as the rear), then drilled out all the pop rivets, removed the aluminum side rails, cut 5/8" off the front of the tonneau with a circular saw, mitered the aluminum rails to 45 degrees, then pop riveted it all back together. Took about 8 hours to to it all.
To get the correct look, I think this is the only way to go. Checkmate will make a custom length tonneau for you, but it's a crap shoot unless you're at their shop in Tennessee. I hate to trust my measurements vs. someone else's. Not that mine are any better, but there are too many variables. One bad measurement on either end and it's a worthless piece of fiberglass and foam.
The end result when done correctly acheived the look I wanted, and I'm glad I did it that way. I do plan on gelcoating the Checkmate in black to try to get it to match the paint. The finish was the only thing I didn't like about it. It's smooth, but you can see the fiberglass satin finish on the top.

Message: I love the Dakotas with the "tastefully small" tailgate style spoilers. they are just the right size and don't clutter up the back half too much. OH yeah, Nitro, Jesse: Fake R/T's can be annoying, but if your one of the people who accuse me of trying to look like and R/T, your wrong. Yes I have a sport plus. Yes, I put the fender flares from and R/T on it. I also took all of the decals off, put a roll pan on the back, and I am waiting for my Xenon front bumper. I am getting sick of people saying "look, he wants to be an R/T." I know I have the wrong wheels! If I wanted an R/T I would have bought one. Frankly, I have seen numbers. I could care less that the R/T may be faster in some cases, but with 3 previous tickets (last one being 2 years ago), I would have been getting raped by my insurance company for those 2 extra letters on the side. So please, if someone wants to make their truck look a certain way, LAY OFF!!! Until you start making that persons payments or until you buy the mods for them, its not your choice, and I don't care what you think! I'm going to go play with my dog now.

Message: FastRTdak,Couldent of said it better. I am also in your catagoery, I have a SLT and I have alot of mods and I do plan on having RT wheels soon, real soon, I get people all the time asking if it is a RT and I tell them nope its a SLT, Im all about customizing a ride, anyhow I just wanted to clear that up.
02BlackRT I have the same spoiler and its painted and ready to go, but I have not instaled it yet beacuse I am looking for someone to get me a flush bed cover, I think the demensions are 57 1/2 by 6ft 6in, Im sure I can find someone to make it for me here in Dallas. Message: I say go for it. It would look fine without a tonneau cover, and then if you want to put a tonneau on, you can take measurements to install it flush against the spoiler.
The good part about a tonneau with the spoiler is that it conceals whatever you use to attach the spoiler to the back of the tailgate. I'm double covered by using a tonneau and a Bedrug.

Will the Xenon 3 piece fit without cutting my cover?
Will the tape hold at high speed?
Can I use some other (better) adhesive?

Message: Dave, you should be fine with the checkmate low profile cover, so long as it doesnt protrude too far onto the tailgate. The 3 pc spoiler holds on with 2 sided tape, but I guarantee you that if you take the time to clean the paint with alcohol (rubbing, not drinking), you'll never get the spoiler off unless you want it off. I suppose if you are still worried, you could use an adhesive from someone like 3M. You could use sheet metal screws, but that may be a little excessive.
Oh yeah, Redneck. Come take a dump on my truck and you'll see a true redneck. At least until I have the gun off the rack, that is. Then you won't be seeing anything but smoke and your life flashing before your eyes. Until you pay for the mans truck, you need to just worry about yourself and let him do what he wants to it.

Message: 02blackrt~~ I have the same mbrp exhaust as you, did you have trouble getting the tips to lower because the only way I can see to lower mine is to cut the hangers and add longer ones or something, I have it to where they both stick out like a 1/2 a mm from the top of the opening and i'm worried about the paint and fiberglass with those tips getting so hot. anything will help.thanx
