Subject: smog and solid axle? IP: Logged
Message: Hey anyone from cali that has done a solid axle swap from 2x4 to 4x4, after the recent Pismo trip I have come to realize that my Dakota is not going to serve the purpose that I want it to. Does anyone know if I convert my 2x4 to a sold axle 4x4 if it will affect the smog. I use to keep up with this stuff but I know they just changed the smog laws to the dyno test and I didn't know if that would make a difference. The computer and the engine will not be changed so I dont think it will I just want to make sure before I make any plans.

Message: I would not modify your truck in CA. I work at The Car Care Center and we stopped doing smogs because it was becoming a huge hasle. Every year the laws get tighter and more costly. We bailed before the $4,000 gas cap tester and the $12,000 dynos become required.
If you can wait till the 2004 Dakotas come out with a new body style and get a 4X4 with a 5.7 Hemi. There are other trucks out there.
