Subject: wont warrant steering rack bc of fabtech

Message:
I just got a call from the service department at dodge and they said that they wont warranty my steering rack because of my fabtech lift, body lift and 33" tires. I think this is bs...when i bought my durango, the sales manager said that they will not say anything about the lift as long as it is no bigger than 3" suspension lift. i know i should never trust a salesman.

My 2002 durango only has 11,100 miles on it...the lift was put on at about 4500 miles.

has anyone had a problem with this...what is the next step. i am going to call customer service in the morning and bitch at the service manager also. any other suggestions.

Thanks for you help.

Travis

What is steering rack doing? I know when I first put on mine I had some popping sounds. I flushed out the fluid, put synthetic fluid in and I don't get the popping too much anymore. Anyway, it sounds like Dealer B.S. The kit shouldn't cause it to do anything unusual. Greg

The lift kit is not likely the culprit, the 33" tires probably are causing the failure. It certainly sounds like it had an issue to begin with only lasting that many miles regardless of tire size, many Dak owners from this website run 33's with no problems for more miles than you have. But, prolly have to get an attorney to fight it if they won't work with you at the dealer or you could always try another dealer for a "second opinion".

My guess is your going to be outta luck as sucky as that is unless you go the attorney route, then again put that money towards getting the rack replaced IMO. There are laws that protect consumers in this instance but at the same time if the dealers are unwilling to replace a part under warranty, the legal fees most often will run higher than the value of part unless its an engine/tranny then you may be better pushing it in court. I am fortunate to have a dealer that I know very well and they tend to let things slide when it comes to all the mods I have done, not everyone is that lucky and it can cause some headaches and wallet woes if you like to mod your in-warranty vehicle. Hope you can get it worked out with a dealer!

I agree. I don't think the lift causes the problem. I had the problem before the lift anyway. Got a question for you 2THEXTRM. Do you know what the width is of your Bushwacker flares? They look good on your truck. Just curious. Thanks, Greg

Try a different dealer.
If still no luck then call Fabtech and see what they can do.

If I recall, I compared them to the factory flares before install and they were approximately .25" wider and more rounded rather than the flatter factory flares. I took some comparison pics during install that kinda give you an idea of the difference if you want them.

I'm having this same problem, i didn't go to the dealer yet. My rack is leaking bad and it started at 28k miles, just 4k miles after the kit was installed. i'm only running 31 inch bfg's. I'm searching the aut-parts online, and used parts for the steering rack. I came up with a place that has the rack from a 2001 dakota that was rear-ended and selling for 100 bucks. Not bad....so i might go that way instead of the dealership hassle.

Sure, send them my way. I'd like to see the difference. I've been tossing the idea of putting flares on for a while. Thanks Greg

Sorry, I didn't get the e-mail when you wrote it. That's pretty much what I was looking for. I like the way they look. I didn't want flares that stuck out too far and look stupid but at the same time I'm getting tired of the pinging of rocks down the side of my truck when I take it off road. Thanks for the pics dude. Soon to have them on. Greg
