Subject: body lift notes and tips IP: Logged
Message: i wanted to start this thread so people can put tips and tricks of doing a body lift.
my body lift should be completed tomorrow.. too many things went wrong. i bought my truck used and i found that it had a spare tire lock on it only i didn't have the key. that took me some time to get around. seems also that my bed had been either replaced or repaired because the bed bolt had lock tite on them already (that was a bitch to get out.
now i am in need of a 16mm box end and i do not have one :( so i will get one tomorrow so i can reattach my front bumper.
some things that i noted that may be of help to other first timers.
1st and foremost - get a compressor with an air rachet if you are doing it alone. this would have saved me SOOO much time and not cost too much.
go at the steering linkage through the wheel well. real easy to get at.
i used a dremel to cut the fan shroud without removing the raditor fluid or fan. note to self - remember to wear protective mask and glasses next time. that black stuff got EVERYWHERE.
you need a hex bit to tighten the steering linkage - i will be getting this tommorrow too.
wobble sockets come in VERY handy
i think you can leave the fuel hose attached when lifting bed(but it might make the bed out of alignment, i don't know.)
for the fuel hose you will need a torx bit. luckily i had these from when i upgraded my tivo.
a 3/4 in drive with some various extentions is very handy too
this is about it. if you have any others please post them here..
laters for now

Message: Short on time to add something useful to this thread, but I just wanted to let you know that my body mount bolts also had red loc-tite on them from the factory. It should be expected since they are not self-locking bolts and are a fairly important bolt that should stay where it is:) So your box was not necessarily removed before, hope that makes you feel better and be sure to post pics when your done!!!

Message: I use my truck more for towing than wheeling so when it came time to lift the rear bumper I made a change. I only raised it 2" and used one of the bumper mounts through on of the receiver holes. If you moved it up 3" the top bolt of the receiver would hit the bumper brakets. Now I have a small gap between the tail gate and the bumper. The receiver now hangs below the rear bumper but thats how Rams and Chevys looks, stock.

Message: Hey Perpetrate, what size of rims are you using for 33's?? Did you have to mod anything for rubbing? I am in the process of doing this and need some tips. If you could help that would be cool.
Thanks C.

Message: DakotaKidd - Stock rims 15x8
My MT/Rs are 33X12.50X15 and do run on tight turns. It is a bad rub but livable. The inner lugs on the tires rubs on the frame rails. Turn full lock and the large lug will grab the frame and not allow the truck to move. It sounds worse that it really is. Only the paint on the frame is missing. I can only turn my steering wheel 1.25 revolutions vs. the stock 1.5 revolutions. You notice it when ever you turn sharp. Most daks with 33's have this problem. I am looking for some wheel spacers to help push the wheels out.
Way worth the rubbing for the look you get! Just stay away from crowded parking lots.

Message: My 33's on stock rims does the same. I trained myself not to turn more than one full revolution of the wheel unless I'm going real slow in a parking lot, then I take it to 1 1/4 turns and it will rub a little.

Message: 2THEXTRM is right. I had locktite also. Just a note, you can get rid of that rubbing by getting a grinder and grinding down about an inch of metal. I ended up with a little hole there but just put a little bondo, sandpaper and paint. And you'd never know. It doesn't really show outward anyway since it's in the wheelwell. I have full turning capabilities. Only time I've rubbed is when I was doing some serious offroading. I dont have pictures of the wheelwells right now but soon. Greg

Message: So it looks like wheels would be better bet since they are like $450 a set vs. $280 at set for spacers. I will save my money and get some MT Classic II (Better than the 589) and get rid of rubbing and look better too.

Message: my bad I over exagerated a bit. they range from 49.00 to 59.00 still a sizable amount of coin for some spacers though. there more like adapters though. I wouldn't buy them if I planned on upgradeing my wheels but for people loke me that already bought some expensive aftermarket rims, I'm seriously thinking about it.

Still tossing the idea of putting them on. And by the way Russ, best thing you can do is to put the bumper back on with the new upper brackets, mark the holes on the outer brackets and drill new holes. I'm surprised they didn't send you those laim plates with two holes on top and bottom. They do work well for figuring out the placement of the new holes but that's about it. I don't think anyone has figured out the outer brackets from the kit. Greg

I did get your email and appreciate it. but theres a bunch of links to spacers and I'm not sure which ones you have.do you know the brand? At this point I may just get a set from truckin suspension as there not 2 expensive and it's hard to find them for 6-4.5

I guess what I was trying to say about the outer brackets for the front bumper is that there were none from the factory to be removed as shown in the instructions from PA. Four bolts and my bumper was off. I did get the brackets that you were talking about in my kit but there is no where to install them. I also found out that its a little more work to get the fan shroud out to modify if you have the transmission cooler on your truck. Its not hard, just takes a little more time. Thanks for the help.

Message: A little late but here is my 2 cents worth.
Everything DodgeSalesGuy said is right on. I did not remove my fuel hose and had no problem.
One bit of advise.... Watch out for the cab hitting the bed as you lift one side. I have a 2002 Quad Cab and I have a small scratch where my bed and cab came together. When it came time to lift the bed we decided to lift the front of it first then the rear instead of side to side.
I also decided to flatten the outer bumper bracket extentions and weld them onto the bumper. I didn't like the way you had to wedge them into place to bolt them on.
And...... I redrilled(actually slotted the original holes)the rear bumper brackets so I could bring them up and in tighter to the bed.
Only problem I seem to have after all is said and done is a shimmy at highway speeds. I've been through everything I can think of and can't lose it. Very frustrating.
As far as the wheels rubbing. I have 15X8 American Racing wheels with 33X12.50 BFG Mud Terrain tires. The back spacing is 1/4 inch shorter than the stock wheels. I rub the corner of the bumper when I'm backing up and very rarely while going forwadr. Depends on passenger load. Like Perpetrate said.... It's no big deal but it sure turns heads in a parking lot. There is NO rubbing on the frame at all. That 1/4 inch must have been just enough.
I would love to share pics with you all as I am very pleased and proud of how it turned out but I have no website to post them. If anyone out there would like to post them for me I would really appreciate it. E-mail me

Message: I just started putting my body lift on my 1996 dakota 4x4. The bed was no problem but when i went to start the front one of the bolts cracked in half, It was the front passanger side of the truck. Luckily there is access to it from under the hood. I was wondering if this would work, drill out the bolt, then with the bolt supplied in the kit find a nut, throw a little lock-tite on there and be done. Also i was wondering if i need to cut my shifter linkage when doing the lift. And also please tell me if you think that there are any other possible problems i might run into.
Thanks a million,
SMITTY
