Message: The gear ratio refers to the gearing in you axle, not your transmission. The higher in number the axle ratio is for better off the line power and better ability to move bigger tires. Only drawback is less top speed and with most, worse gas mileage.
Well depending on your axle set-up i think you could have 3.55 gears, but not sure. If you have the V6 then you should probably think of going 4.10 gears so you not only gain ability for bigger tires but actually get a little more preformance too. If you got the 4 Cylinder or do serious wheeling, go with 4.56.

Message: Well if you're new to it and have money to spend...Randy's Ring and Pinion should have the right gears for your 8.25" axle. Then you bring it to a shop and have them install it. Should run about $400 all said and done for gears and install.
If you need to save money...the install isn't easy, but you can save a butt load if you or a friend does it. The gears will probably run you $200 after shipping @ most.
You can probably figure a gear change up to 4.56 will give you around the same power as if your truck came with the V6.

Message: If your friend is at all knowledgable with cars and doing a gear swap, it should take about 5 hours at most.
The install is both difficult and time consuming. And yes, go with the 4.56, or 4.10 at the least. The gears will give you to off-the-line power you want, just don't expect to go faster than 95mph with either gears.
With gears, the general rule of thumb is if you are going to go to 4.10s, might as well get 4.56 and really enjoy the power! Besides, a difference of .5 compared to stock won't give you much, should go all out with 4.56s.
