Subject: Lifting my Sport IP: Logged
Message: I am concidering lifting my '98 Dakota Sport 4x4. I was thinking of putting a Suspension lift (3" possibly) and also a 3" body lift. (I want to put 33's under it so I want some extra height)
I've been searching the web and found Rancho and Fabtech lifts for my dak. Could anyone tell me which would be the better buy? In pricing, the Fabtech is less expensive, but will I sacrifice quality to save $$$ ?
I am a total newby with lifts so any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Message: Go with the Rancho and the body. Fabtech is only made for two wheel drives so thats almost your only option, unless you go for the 5.5 Tuff Country.

Message: Would the tuff country give me about the same height as the 3" rancho + the body lift combined?
Which supsension is the better quality?

Message: I basically have the same questions. I want about 5 inches of lift so that I can have 33's with a little extra room when I'm off road (plus I like how it looks). So, I guess my options are the Rancho combined with a 2 or 3" body lift or the Tuff Country lift. But, I've been told that the Rancho lift is MUCH better when it comes to quality.

Also, another question:
I have 15X8's right now - I'm gonna stick with those for now (just not enough money). But, if I want to go to 15X10's later on, am I gonna be screwed if I go with the Rancho and a 2" body lift?

Message: I have the tuff country lift...love the height but my ride is a bit rougher now and my had some alignment woes (the alignment shops fault me thinks, never did lifted alignment before mine), and my current problem I've posted about burping gear oil. The rancho lift rides much better I hear. I have pics of the two lifts side by side courtesy of Blue Twister and the Lancaster dakota cruise in. I just have to find the link. If you want height go for tuff country. If you want enough height for 33's and maintain the stock ride, go with the rancho lift.

Message: Thanks. The info and pictures really help. Do you have any more pictures of the two lifts? Either separate or side by side? And what size tires and wheels are on both of those trucks?

Message: let me look on the pictures...we both got 15x8 wheels and 33x12.5.15 tires.
you can't use stock 15" wheels with the tuff country lift as well...to much backspacing, will rub your tie rods bad at full lock. You have to get some aftermarket rims...however, I really haven't heard of other people having this problem so it might work for you.

Message: born2steel- thanks for the info and the pics. I love the look of your dak with the tc. fabulous!! and I have been reading your posts about your problems with the burping. As much as I want a huge lift and love the look of the tuff country, I think I may go with the rancho. for the money, and fact of having a more comfortable ride and better alignment, the rancho seems to be the better choice for me. I'm a novice so the fewer the problems, the better.
On a different note, what are everyones opinions on tire brands? I saw pictures of yokohamas, courser mt's and gereral grabber mt's and I loved all of them. Which would be the best value for the money??

Message: Me too Cuffy, I like the looks of the TC lift, but I would rather get the Rancho and have a little better ride and an easier time with the alignment. I will add a 2" body lift to it so that it will hopefully be about the same height as the TC anyway. Hopefully, if I get 15X10's later on I wont have problems with rubbing because I really dont wanna do any trimming on my truck and I dont really wanna go with a 3" body lift because I want the frame to show as little as possible.
As for tires, I have had the BFG AT's('79 K5 Blazer), BFG MT's('97 Ram), and a set of Mud Kings. The AT's were the quietest and had the best grip in the wet and they were a great tire for all conditions. The MT's were a little louder and had less grip on pavement in the rain, but they were awesome off road. The Mud Kings were on my Dakota when I bought it a couple of months ago and they are now pretty worn and they have terrible traction in the rain. I'm gonna go with the new BFG MT KM's when I get the lift done.

Message: I just read, in another thread, that a guy has a used rancho lift for sale. I think he has it on a 99 so would it fit on my 98 Sport CC? And is it really safe to buy and install used lifts? I'm looking to safe some $$$ on my lift and thought this might be the way to go?
Any suggestions?

Message: Thanks born2steel. I was hoping to get a positive response to ease my mind. I'm trying to find ways to save cash on my first lift due to $$$ restraints (married) so a used lift would be great. I'm also hoping to swap services for installation. A friend of my brothers has installed several different lifts on different trucks so I'm hoping to have him do mine and I'm gonna build an entertainment center for him (he'll provide the materials). I think that's a fair trade.....
