Subject: body lift install Q's IP: Logged
Message: I'm considering buying the 2 or 3" Performance Accessories bodylift that seems to be quite popular around here.
My questions are about the install: how long does it take? how difficult is it? any special tools required? is it a do it yourself, or shop only?
TIA

Message: I think it's a DIY. I used combo wrenchs, sockets, screw driver, knife, the jack that came with my truck, and six pack of beer. Took around 4-5 hours. I read the instructions 4 or 5 times prior to starting, so I pretty much knew how to do it without having to read while I did it.

Message: Hiyas,
I did the same PA 3" body lift about a month ago now. After you put the GapGuards in (sold separately), it looks good - and you'll feel it's worth it.
Do you have a 4x4? Manual or auto? That'll help me target the toughness of it. I'm no expert, but I asked around just as you're doing now - and it helped me a ton. Took me and my friend about 7 hours, because I have a hitch in the back - it was a bit problematic.

Message: Oh forgot to mention, that 4-5 hours was just the lift, the gap gaurds took me about 2 additional hours (installed about a week after lift) because I used bolts for the rear ones and fastened them to the inside of the lip, rather than on the outside. Looks much better IMO.

Message: Torque,
I did the same thing on my QC. The lift only took 4 hrs. from start to finish (including eating lunch). The gap guards only took a half hour or so to put on and I also put them on from the backside , you don`t even notice them.
Oh yea , when we did my lift a had a lift and two friends that did most of the work! It was very easy to do though. I thought the hardest thing was trying to figure out the instructions!
BTW , how can I post a pic. of my newly lifted truck here , other than sending a pic. to go in the viewers rides section? My previous Dakota is there and it took a long time to get the photo up on the site.
Thanks, Scott

Message: Scott, how did you get access to a lift? Auto shop or something?
The lift would make things a LOT easier. But no one has said what they worked on - 2x4, 4x4, auto, manual. The instructions said wielding had to be done with the manual and possibly 4x4.
I'm curious if that is a pain - for when I do eventually by a 4x4.

Message: I did my lift by myself and with the scissor jack that came with my truck! haha Tried using my floor jack but when I'd lift the body, the body would move one way or another to compensate for the jack moving up. I just used blocks of wood and the jack and it took really no time to lift each side.
Scott, you can create your own album and post your pics on my Dodge Trucks Photo album:

Then link to them from there. Let me know if you need help.

Message: michigandak,
A great friend of mine has a garage that is probably...3-4000 maybe more sq. feet , yes this is not a typo. It`s equipped with a lift inside , so we decided to do it there. No brainer really , it was either that or the hard way. All my friends are into big trucks , and have done many lifts , both susp. and body , so that also helped a bunch. While I`m checking out the instruction book , they are half done , doh!
Oh by the way , mine is an 02 QC 4X4 SLT auto. with the electronic transfer case that has a switch , instead of a shifter , good and bad I guess. I does make it easier to lift though , one less thing to worry about.
Torque,
Thanks for the help , as soon as I get a new cable to connect my camera to the computer (ask the dog about it!) I`ll get those pics. to you , and yes I`ll probably need some more help.
Thanks again,
Scott

I was worried doing a lift on a 4x4 Auto was a bit more trickier. Least I have something to look forward to in about 2 years. (when I buy another finally. Dodge forever for me.)

Yeah the body lift is pretty well explains it self while lookin at the parts, I put one on my first truck a ranger when i was 16 and then last year i put one on my friends 99 dakota, it was a breeze took a couple of hours, I'll tell ya a trick if you have nurf bars on your truck that are attached to your body its a really easy if you can get your hands on about four jacks and you can lift the whole cab off at once, and the bed just pick it up. one more thing you might watch is that we had some trouble gettin the bed and cab straight with each other again.

Well i was thinkin of runnin a 15x10 but i'm having trouble finding a rim for my truck, no body seems to make them for my truck, but i'll do about anything if i could run a 33x12.50 cause i want a tire that will look right when i get my 5 1/2 lift. I figured i'd keep back spacin the same as my stock wheel.

Message: Well fellas, I am glad to have read this post, I am going to be starting my lift this evening. Hopefully I can do a 5-6 hour lift. About the hitch, I was thinking about that last night, what can you do for it so it does not stick down like most Chevy's you see with a body lift. Also do the Gap Guuards come with the screws or clips to keep them in, or are they more? Has anyone actually welded the over loads in and the 4X4 shift extension in? Thanks a lot.

Message: If you have a floor shifter then pop off the plug at the top of the handle and unscrew the nut holding it on. Go to Home Depot or other hardware store and get some all-thread and coupling nut and make an extension. It's a lot easier than the welding.
The auto makes it real easy. It works off of a cable so you just make sure the cable isn't in a bad position. They have plenty of slack though.
Your hitch won't be a problem. It actually made mine easier because I used the mounting point for the hitch to remount my bumper.
I have 98 instructions. Drop me an email with a fax number. You can also contact Performance Acces. and get them to fax a copy.

Message: Well it is done, will get some pics(Clear Ones) when I wash this afternoon. It took about 4 and a half hours last night, but I have to still put in the Transfercase bracket and the bracket for the transmission loop. Did you guys install the overloads on the frame under the bed? And I also notice that there was only one bracket for the brake junction. Has any of you made a second bracket for the back end of that brake junction? But I am really happy with the looks of my truck. The stearing is still like stock, I heard people complaining about slop in the wheel, maybe it was not done right I guess. Now I am going to have to buy some nerf bars to cover up the frame. Although it looks alot better then those Chevy's with the frame three ten inches bellow the body after they lift them. Thanks for the input!
Travis
Reker-As for the directions, they are not the same for the 2000 Dak. The shifter goes up with the body, the linkage under the truck going to the transfer case is about 5 inches long, you have to put in extension in there, cut it in half and weld it in. I found the directions suck. They are geared for an older Dak. The pics from the direction all say 1998 on them. Like the steering shaft did not have to come out like the directions say, you can just take out the bolt at the top closest to the cab and slip it off from the stearing column, you'll see what I mean when you get to it. But in all it was very easy and quick. Also I have 589's with 32's and they rub in the front still. Just barely, so you might not want 33's. Something to think about. Good luck to you.

Message: unhook the grounds from the firewall, then re-attach them after the lift. I had one ground strap that wasn't quite long enough to reach the original bolt, but Dodge thoughfully provided another bolt that wasn't doing anything closer to where I needed it.
And the shifter design is different from 97-99 and 2000. The 2000 4X4 floor shifter is mounted to the body with linkage going to the transfer case, so the linkage has to be extended, not the shifter itself. 97-99 shifter is attached directly to the trasfer case, so the shifter needs to be extended.

When I called and complained, hoping they'd replace them, I was basically told that we should have paid someone to do it and that I'd have to return the whole kit! We weren't about to remove it from the truck, so we went to a neighbor with welding equipment and had him make some durable brackets. That was the last time I'd buy or endorse their crap. well it's a good thing you brought up those pesky radiator mounts because the dakotas lift uses the stock ones. i've spoken with PA several times and they were very helpful. out of all the body lifts out there, the PA is the best. also, PA doesn't make their own gap guards, they sell lift lip's.
