Hawkeye,

Do you know the back spacing on your rims?
(sorry if you posted this before... I couldn't find it).
I've got a 01' quad cab that I'm doing the 3" body lift to, and I'm trying to find a wheel/tire combo.
I'm pretty set on BFG or Pro Comp Muds, 33x12.5-15's, but I'm having trouble deciding on which rim to pick.
Looks like it's between Eagle Alloys, and Amer. Racing... but backspacing will be the deciding factor.

Thanks for the help

Correct me if I'm wrong Hawkeye, but you're running AR-767's. They have 5" of backspacing, while the Bajas (the other popular wheel) has a backspacing of 5.25", which matches the factory. Of course less backspacing means a wider stance. Is that what you're looking for rck?

RESQready, you siad that the less backspacing on a wheel, the wider the stance. Well, for the largest tire possible on a truck, is it better to go with a backspacing that is small or big? I have Am. Racing Nitros, but I did not pay much attention to back spacing when I bought them a year and a half ago. I want to get new rims that are in the 15x9-10in range. Thanks alot man.

Also, what is the widest tire you can run on a 7in wide rim. And an 8in wide rim. So here say that you can squeez a 11.50 on a 7in rim as long as there is not much abuse to the truck. Which now that I am deeply in a 6 year architecture program in college, I dont get much time to do any real wheelen. Thanks for your help gentlemen.

Hey guys.
I was checking out their website and the 767's are 5 inches.
So stock is 5.25? (I was gonna pull one of mine and measure)

On Ultra's website, they list their "Dakota wheel" as 3.6-something - that's a little confusing...
I guess Hawkeye's 33x12.5's worked out with 5, so I'm kinda keeping that as my maximum.
Joe E., as far as I understand, 7 inch rims can go up to 11.5 wide tires, 8's - 12.5. Looks like you're trying to do the same thing I am - put the biggest meats on possible (with minimal rubbing, and minimal trouble from the law for sticking out pass the fenders ;) )
Ultra seems like they have nice selection.

Joe E.- Tire/wheel fit is a tricky question to answer. First off, you have the manufacturer's recommendations, next, you have what's actually possible, and then there are those who make anything fit. For a 7" wheel, the tire manufacturer will usually say a 10.5" wheel is the max, but you should have no trouble with an 11.5". With an 8" wheel, 11.5" tires are the recommended max, but anyone who wants to will run 12.5's no problem.

As for backspacing and tire size, it will again depend on your truck. A suspension lift or body lift will give you a lot of options. Talk to a tire or 4 wheel shop and see what they have done. With less backspacing, the tires will stick out farther and be more likely to rub the wheel wells or front bumper during a hard turn on uneven ground. A lift will give you much more clearance. When it comes to making it fit, I've seen a stock 2000 Dak with a torsion bar crank running 33x12.5" tires on 4.5" backspaced wheels -- of course there was some rubbing.

I know I haven't really answered your question, but I would hate to recommend something that doesn't work for your truck. With stock suspension, you ought to stay in the range of 4.5" to 5.25" of backspacing and 32x11.5 tires. Any more or less will result in significant rubbing somewhere.

BTW, where are you going to school? I also took the 6 year approach to architecture.
