Subject: Rear end lift help IP: Logged
Message: ok i think if i raise the front end of my truck 6" i will only need to get 2 or 3 inches of lift on the back end to level out my truck... whats the easiest way of doing this? shackles? add-a-leaf? or is there something else? oh yeah btw its a spring under not a spring over so i cant just put a block under it.

Message: i have a 99 dak 2wd SLT 3.9 V6mag
i am trying to make a lift for the front end of my truck but im not so sure as how to go about the rear.... i will need about 2-3" of lift in the rear without making it a spring over (leafs on top of the axle) i was hoping i could be pointed in the right direction of how i should go about lifting the rear

Message: The only two ideas I've come up with are getting new leafs and extended rear shackles. Not sure if add-a-leafs would do anything for you. Why wouldn't you just do a spring-over. That's the easiest, I think.

Message: the spring over would be too much lift... your looking at about 4-5 inches for the axle and then you have to add in the thickness of the leafs so you can add about another 1.5-2" there so your looking at 5.5-6.5" of lift and that means id have to lift my front end about 8-9 inches to level out the truck... and with the way im looking at lifting my truck it might be too much torque for the connections and besides i have 31's on my truck right now (with a stock suspension) and i dont want to lift my truck up too high to where it looks stupid with small tires on them... i might do that later when i can afford new tires... well ok when i wear the tred off of the BFGs ive got... but i dont think ill go any higher then 32's anyways... ive only got the 3.9L

Message: after thinking about it i think im just going to fab a couple of blocks that will bolt into the shackles and sits flush again the frame and have it have have the proper links for my springs... probably be easier because you know those stupid store bought shiz says 3 inches but really means 1 inch ;) hehe

Message: The storebought sh!t says 3 inches and is only 1?!
What are you talking about?
If you mean a shackle lift , you a partially right.
They only move the rear of the spring down , not the entire spring , therefore you only get half of the height of the new extended shackle.
You would have to move the front spring perch down also. That can be done , but you would need a good welder (person) , with a good welder and fabrication skills.

Message: Shackle lifts will do the job(should use hangers along with it). I got a 2 inch shackle lift on my dakota, and it raised it exactly 2 inches. What they do is ship u a 4 inch shackle so that u get the lift u want, and yes they only lift half of what it says, so getting a 4 inch shackle will lift it 2 inches. That's what i did and my truck's level after installing the fabtech 3". I wouldn't go any higher than 3 inches with a shackle because it changes the angle of the driveshaft and can cause grinding and wear-and-tear on the u-joints. Either that, or flip the leafs on top. Adding a leaf will not work on a 2wd because the leafs are located under the axle, and the leafs will just pile up downwards. The fabtech lift is indeed a 3 inch lift upfront, but only 1.5 in the rear, i don't know if they overlooked this or they did that intentionally because a stock daktoa is already higher in the rear. After i lifted mine with the fab, the rear was lagging, which i think is because of the add-a-leaf pulled it down.

Message: Ok I have a 5" Shackle from them in the rear.. Although I really hate that company the shackles they really can't screw up to badly. (Although it took them sending 4 to get me 2 that fit correctly).
I'd do a 3" Shackle lift and a 1 1/2" Add-a-Leaf if I had to do it over again.

Message: Ahh, i ordered a set of 2 inch shackles from them and they fit just perfectly. I still need to get the hangers though :) Shackles also give u a little more articulation, which i definately need.

Message: Chaximus .. Disconnect your rear anti-sway bar that's what's keeping you from getting your articulation.

Message: I am trying to lift my dakota 3-4" with a tight budget. Would bigger coils be efficent enough for the front? Also if i were to get the shackles from that site(www.truckinpennsylvania.com),would that be enough to lift the rear or do i have to get hangers also?

Message: I didn't check but they might have 3 inch shackles for the dakota. As for the front, u can get a 2 inch fabtech lift for around $200, but as for putting on bigger coils, that would just stiffen the ride. Take a look at www.4wheelparts.com , because they have 2 different lift kits for the dakota 2wd (if that is what u are driving).

Message: Using 3 inch shackles without hangers would look bad, or prob perform bad too. That will change the angle of the leafs and drive shaft, so i wouldn't go there. Might grind up ur U-Joints over time. I suggest hangers with anything over 2 inches.

Message: You can only use hangers in the front if u have leafs up there, but dakotas normally don't have leafs in front. Only in the rear. U need shackles for the rear section of the leaf and a hanger for the leaf end that points toward the front.
