 Subject: 3 Inch body lift

I was hoping someone could give me a hand. I just put a 3 inch Tail Masters body lift on my 1987 Dodge Dakota. it is the 3.9l with 4 wheel drive. Everyhitng is all done, except the steering shaft. The direction I have say to use the extension they supply. i can't figure out how to get the steering shaft off to install the supplied part. Does anyone have any ideas? Do I really need to extend the steering shaft? Any clue what would happen if i didn't switch them? thanks alot for your help. Any information is greatly appreciated.
