 Subject: Beginner lift question

For starters, I just bought a 1997 extended cab dakota 4x4.
Im looking for a good, but cheap lift for it as I have a lot yet to pay off on the truck. The 5.5" lift is too big, and Im looking more at the 3" lifts that are out there, either the PA or JC Whitney.
With these lifts (just body lifts for now), what else will have to come with it? Will I need new shocks and springs for a body lift? Also, does it look awkward at all to have just a body lift and not a suspension lift?
I just got the truck and am looking to set it apart from the others since Ive seen a couple similar ones. 4 Wheeling isnt in the super near future since I owe on the truck, this is mostly for looks, so any help is appreciated.

well josh, i just put on a PA lift(which is what JC Whitney sells) on sunday. it was pretty simple and not overly time consuming. everything you need to change comes with the kit with the exception of covers for the inside of the wheel wells.
i stuck with the stock 16" wheels and put a set of 285/75/16 on. all i can say is that it looks much better. the ride is a little more harsh due to the tires themselves but overall much better.
i don't think you should listen to the complaints about loose steering. based on what i saw while installing the extension and the hardware there is no real way for that to happen accept for wear and tear.

What is the outside diameter of those tires you put on? I want to keep my stock rims too and Iam looking for 33ish size tires. Got pictures?

i have not actually measured them myself but the manufacturer says they are 33.1x11.2

now I never said my math was that great but Im pretty sure a 305 is a 33inch... 255 certainly cant be 33 inches... I have a 00 dak cc 4.7 with a 3inch PA body lift and I run 33inch BFG Mud Terrains with NO rubbing... I did turn my torsion bars though.

Actually the 255 is TALLER. It's 33.5". They measure roughly 33x9.50.
My friend had them on his Z71. looked great on his 7" rims. They look a little silly on Dakotas especially with fender flares. Way too skinny.
305/75/r16=33" x 12.50
315/75/r16=35" x 12.50
255/85/r16=33" x 9.50

just in case your wondering how to get those messurements... (correct me if im wrong) the first set of numbers (ie. 285) is the width of the tire in mm the second number(ie. 75) is the hieght of the tire OFF the rim and the third number is the rim size of course...

Consider yourself corrected......
First number is Width (divide it by 25.4 to get approx inches)
***Second number is Aspect Ratio (75 means the sidewall is .75*the Width of the tire)
Yes third is the Rim.
So the Height of the tire in inches is:
(Width/25.4)*(Aspect/100)*2+Rim

ahhh yeah thanks... i was thinking to myself that seems too easy... its been a while since ive done tire shoping and i remembered there was something retardedly complex for something so simple... (i like the inches better its straight forward ;) hehe )

All of the tire manufacturers have web sights. And most all of them have charts listing all of the sizes they make, the actual sizes of each one, and rim width recommendations for each. It might clear up a lot of the confusion above. Also, the same size tire varies in actual size (slightly) from mfg to mfg.

Hey
My dad just gave me a 2000 Dakota SLT 4.7L V8mag (not 4x4). I want to give it a new look(its 100% stock right now) and i want to just lift it and give it mud terran tires. I dont know how much i want to lift it b/c where i live noone lift a Dakota, so i have no idea what looks good for a Dakota. Anyways can someone send me ideas and the price for doing this, i would greatly appreciate the help. Thanx
