Subject: Best on road/ off road tire? IP: Logged
Message: As with many people on this board, I need to figure out what tire I want to run once I get my lifts complete. I do alot of street driving but I also want an aggressive off road tire. So lets put this issue to rest...what is the best on road / off road tire? Ratings should include on road performance, off road performance, cleaning ability, noise, and overall quality. This will give everyone some perspective on what they're looking for. Its a given with off road tires you have to find a happy little median between off road and on road performance, as in sacrificing one for the other. With this rating system everyone should be able to find a tire of their own personal preference. Thanks.

Message: Ok, I'm not sure this is the format you want the ratings in, but I think this will be a good post, so I'm gonna give it a shot.
Lets base our ratings on the good ol 1-10 system, 1 being bad, 10 being good.
Remember when you are rating your tires, don't compare your tires to street tires, try to keep it apples to apples. I will be suggesting the BFG Mud Terrains, so I will be comparing these to other MUD TIRES.
As much as I like the BFG's, I really don't like them any bigger than a 33. I don't like the look of a 35x12.50. If they made them wider to accomodate for the height, I would love the monster meats, but in a smaller tire (33 and under) they are awesom.
On road performance 9
Off road performance 8
Cleaning ability 8
Noise 7 (they are quiet while still new, but once you get down to 1/4 tread, they get ear piercing loud)
Overall quality 10 - Great puncture resistance, great durability (tire wear), good looking, and you don't have flat spots in your tires when you first start driving in the morning.
I have run these tires in the past, and I've put them through every type of terrain except snow and ice. I have done some rock crawling, but not much and they have tackled each and every type of terrain I've thrown them at ( construction site mud, deep soft sand, black bottomless mud, hard packed hills, soft hills, and pea gravel).
On another note, I've run BFG A/T's also. If you do a lot of highway driving and not much off road driving, but want a good all terrain (but by no means an aggressive off road tire) I would have to suggest these.
On road performance 10
Off road performance 6
cleaning ability 5
noise 9
Overall quality 8
Well, I guess I'm done. LOL. theres my $.08 ! Hope this helps.
On another note...I would like to know how Mickey Thompson baja's are. Blizzard, let us know. I'm thinking about putting them in the prospect pool for when I get some new tires(32x12.50's). I just heard they wear kinda quick.

Message: thanks...you basically said what I was trying to say...its like comparing apples and oranges. I'm just looking for the best tire to suit both purposes. Thanks for clearing up the format and the info...anyone else?

Message: For what it's worth I agree with Jerobiemon on the BGF MTs. All except for the noise part. Mine are too new to verify the sound level after wear. Mine are very quiet now. Not much louder than the GY Wranglers that came stock. I have done lots of rock crawling with them and was not disappointed. Great traction on tall rocks even after 2ft deep creek crossing. I even got a 1"long cut in the sidewall of left front. Not a deep one but after two weeks still holding air and no noticable difference. On street very nice ride. I can only "feel" the lugs at very slow speed.

Message: Dodster,
You are absolutely correct, they are really quiet through 75% of their wear and ya gotta love the lug rythem at slow speeds. I remember that was the first thing I noticed when pulling out of the tire place, but I kinda liked it (not perverted pun intended)!

Message: i run mickey thompson baja claw radials. 99% street driving, i have found their is VERY low road noise from these tires, alot less than any mud terrain tire which i thought was suprising due to the aggresive tread. tires dont really make a hum until around 55mph.i have 31 10.50s
and im not sure what the total mileage of these tires will be.

Message: i have been running hankook T24's up here in alberta
canada for almost 3 years, and still have lots of thread
left. they are very popular in the oil patch, as we have
lots of heavy gumbo mud and snow. they are very loud
on the road(i do 80% of my driving on the street), but
that knob on the left side of your stereo marked vol.
takes care of the problem just fine. the only bad thing is
that hankook doesn't make them any more. go figure.
they now have the RT01 dynamic mt, but i don,t know
anything about it.

Message: i would have to say that the toyo mt's are the best on/off road tire, i run 35x13'5 and they have virtually no vibration or road noise, and the do great off road in the mud they clean good, and they grip rocks really good, in the snow they grip great too, and for road driving, they can hold onto the road like a street tire

Message: I actually ran a tire called a Liberator A/T on my old Taco I had (31 10.50's) and I loved them. Excellent tread life, nice aggressive look, virtually NO road noise and did a very good job off road (I live in a rural/"farm" area and volunteer with a Fire Dept/Ambulance service and there were many times we used My taco to go into the woods to get to patients) And the best part, They only cost $78/piece from Wal-Mart (only place to get them). I haven't had to replace the tires on my Dak yet, but I'm sure I'll go with the Liberators on it as well as these tires also have a very good load rating. Just My 2 Cents.

Just a couple pics on here of my dak (haven't had it long enough to really get some good pictures)

Message: just so you know the liberators aren't made past 31x10.5...i think he was looking for 33s. Anyway i have run Maxxis mudders, Sport King AT, Mud King, and BFG AT, by far the best two overall were the bfg at's and the sports king at's. i would go sport king becuase they wre the same thing and cost way less...also look into the Kumho Venture MTs...i have heard nothing but good about them. good luck.

Message: thanks Justin, didn't know that. I don't plan on getting 33's for a long time anyhow so I never paid much attention... speaking of which, I know this has probably been asked numerous times, but would I have to cut out the fender wells or anything else to fit 33's on my stock suspension??

Message: well that answer varies depending on who you talk to, some guys say yes and others say no. a lot of it depends on what wheels you are running. if you have a complete stock set up and want 33s, i would say get 33x10.5 bfg a/t. anyway, good luck finding the right tires!

Message: Well, I was looking around on the net tonight at work and found the two tires I've narrowed it down to...I'm going to stick with the 31's, and I'm looking at either the BFG A/T KO's, or the BFG Land Terrain tires. I know the KO's are much better, but money is tight, and I can't decide if $80 more is worth it to get the KO's... any suggestions? Remember the key sentence.... MONEY IS TIGHT :o)

Message: never used the land terrains. keep in mind the A/T s will have better traction in snow, mud, etc...at the same time i would guess the land terrains will last just as long or longer? if money is what you're worried about go with the land terrains, i have never heard anything negative about a BFG tire. good luck.

Message: I figure that the Land Terrain is probably a really good tire, and the only reason I am considering the AT's over the LT is the fact that 1)we get some pretty nasty storms up here in WV, and 2) I run with a vol. fire dept, so naturally I'm always getting called out during the worst of snow storms when everyone decides to take out trees and telephone poles. According to BFG website, the AT has a snow rating of 9 and the LT is 6, pretty big difference there. I think I'll just save up the extra $80 and get the AT's! :o)

Message: I just put a set of 33" trxus m/t's on the old battlewagon. They run great and have pretty decent traction. Very quiet on the road (I personally like a loud tire) have a great looking tread pattern with beefy sidewalls, and theyre based off a tsl design. I just got the tires though, and my buddy with the same ones had em on for only a few months before he was shipped overseas, so I can't confirm mileage. Looks promising, though. Best of all, theyre pretty cheap. $616 shipped to my house for a set of 4 33x12.5"
How deep can that pond possibly be?

Message: I didn't ask how GY Wranglers are in the winter - I already have those tires on now, so I know how they do.
I'm asking about BFG MT's. Would someone please let me know if they have used them in snowy conditions, and how they fared.
Thanks All.
