Subject: RE: Best on road/ off road tire? IP: Logged
Message: I've been 4-wheel’n for 20 years, mostly in sticky clay type mud or through the blue goo of cattails. Dry terrain was mostly packed clay and shale (strip mine country stuff). You might want to keep in mind the worst-case scenario. An A/T tire is fairly quiet, but when you get into some serious mud or on a slick, packed hill, you’ll find it’s as useful as a racing slick. Time after time I’ve pulled out guys with factory Wrangler GS-A’s or RT/S’s or even BFG A/T’s. These closed pattern type tires will not clean in the mud.
If you’re after a decent ride and good off road performance you can’t go wrong with a mud lug radial. They will hum when they start to wear. But I’ll put up with hum all year for the few months of snow we get here in Ohio. And when I’m back in the mud, I’ll know I’ll have what it takes to get through.
Check out these tires that I’ve seen in action:
Mud King (great economy class tire)
Dunlop Mud Rover (had a set of these, did great)
Wild Country RVT (a little milder pattern, but still held up)
Super Swamper (simply the best)
Good luck with your purchase.
And remember, pull 'em out for free, because someday you'll be in the goo!!!

The way we play here in CT, if you pull someone out you should expect a few bucks or some beer. The best equipment to have in your toolbox is not a hi-lift, a comealong or a shovel. It's a case of beer. Also, where we go wheelin its pretty tame but can get nasty real quick with a heavy rain, especially like the one we're getting now. When we see someone with a stock s10 blazer or the like buried in 2 feet of soppy mud, we leave 'em there for being so stupid. If you know youre gonna get stuck, you know you gotta call a wrecker. I'm not mean, there are just some stupid people out there. Why should I risk damage to my rig when they were the ones that are being dumb? If I break something pulling them out, they won't pay to fix it.
How deep can that pond possibly be?

Message: mud tires are great in snow, deep snow at slow speeds that is
stopping is slick conditions, not so much
pretty much every mud tires gets a poor rating on ice and slick roads
keep that in consideration
