Message: Knobby is correct about this one...if you want it done ,and done right , you`re looking at around 7 grand. Even if you get "junkyard" stuff , it is going to have to be rebuilt. Trust me , I`ve got over a grand wrapped up in just one front axle(DANA44) that`s collecting dust.
There are a million different things that don`t always come to mind when people think they`re just going to throw an straight axle under their truck.
You`ve got heim-joints to buy, steering components, gears, driveshafts to fab.,brakes to rebuild, and even the high quailty fasteners add up quick.
I`m sure it can be done cheaper , but even if you do it yourself and you enjoy doing it, you still have to factor in your time. Most of us (I think) aren`t able to complete such a project ourself, especially on a daily driver.
The shop that was going to do my 99 quoted me around 3500 just in parts-not incl. labor- to do the job , and that was with me already having the (already rebuilt)axle.

Message: i was talking with nate a long time ago about converting my truck to a straight axle and 4x4 and about 8 inches of more travel... he told me to get 5 or 6 grand together and goto utah and stay about a week and we could get it all done... but he also has alot of connections at junkyards and differnt shops so he gets some really good discounts and well he is a mechanic so he knows how to do everything...

Message: I'm considering putting a suspension lift on my '98 dakota sport ext.cab. I've seen 2 that keep popping up. A Fabtech and a Rancho. Which one would be the better buy? The fabtech is cheaper at all of the places I've looked, but is the quality cheaper to?
And I was thinking of supplementing my suspension lift with a 3" body lift, any suggestions on which one to get? The reason I'm thinking of putting both lifts on is so I can put 33's under it.
I'm new to lifts and offroading so if it seems I'm going about this the wrong way please let me know of a better more effient way to lift my truck.
Thanks

Message: Jamiz Pony,
Okay your options of suspension lift are tough countries 5.5" lift or Rancho's 3" lift. I have personal experience with the TC lift so I am kind of biased. It wasn't that hard to install, just a long weekend. The ride is just fine and the alignment isn't too bad as long as you find a shop that is willing to do it, they just won't warranty it. Many people have had very good things to say about the rancho lift, they say that you keep the same steering lines so the alignment will be much better. As far as install I think it is the same as the TC lift. I think that both lifts allow 33's to fit, but sometimes your tires can still rub. Some people, although it is not recomended, put either lift and a 3" body lift and they can clear 35's. Other than that you can do a search on this web site for other information because it is listed very many times here.
As far as you needing some wheels, check out my post under wheels, lift, and suspension parts, I have some wheels and the TC lift for sale pretty cheap.

Anyone interested in buying four BRAND NEW Goodyear Wrangler MTR's? They are size 285.75 R16 (equivalent to a 33x11.50) and have not been used at all.
(if you want) The tires also come with four brand new 16x8 factory wheels from Dodge. These rims are in flawless condition as well.
I am selling this package because I have to trade my Dakota in for a car, and I don't really plan on fitting 33 inch tires on it. So take advantage of this deal because I intend to sell them at a bargain price. If you are interested please email me with questions/comments and I would be more than happy to reply. More pictures are available as well.

Message: I just installed the 6.5 inch kit from Truckin' on my 2001 Quad - it was the hardest thing I've ever done! It took me and a buddy the better part of a week (after work and all day on the weekend) to get it assembled - about 32 hours total. Everything fit pretty well, and all the parts were VERY stout; all the hardware was grade 8 stuff, so it turned out to be quite sturdy. The only problem area was the steering shaft to rack and pinion - I ended up ordering some parts from Flaming River to replace the stock rag joint, and now it's all cool, although the steering wheel is now 90 degrees out of phase. However, I seem to have inadvertently caused another problem - my airbag light started blinking last night, and now it's on constant. My horn is out and my cruise control doesn't come on - I checked the fuses and pulled open the column, but I can't find anything obvious. If y'all have a guess as to the cause, give me a yell before I take to the dealer (gonna have to do that to shut off the damn airbag light anyway)

Message: Doug, to fix the 90 degree problem I ordered from Flamin River two 3/4in. DD to spline universals and a 3/4in. spline shaft to go between the two universals so you can adjust the setteing of the wheel. I did'nt have a problem with the air bag light and horn though so I can't help you there but good luck with it, I hope you get it worked out.

Message: Thanks Jimbo - I wish I talked to you before I spent some time on this - the good thing is that I ended up with the exact same solution you describe - the Truckin' kit came with two Flamin' River U-Joints, but the instructions were really bad, so I ended up screwing up the piece of DD Truckin' supplied. So I got a 36" chunk of DD and a vibration damping U-Joint from FR - i replaced the stock rag joint with the damping model, and now it works great - except for being 90 degrees off. Did you keep the stock collapsible steering mechanism, or replace that? My guess is that be replacing the slip joint I might have set off something in the airbag sensing electronics...ah well, nature of the beast, huh? Thanks for the reinforcement, though. Where on Maui are you? I'm on the Big Island in Hilo.

Message: Doug, I did use the stock steering shaft I cut it like the insructions said, but it was a little hard to understand. I live in Waihee, right outside of Wailuku. If there's anything I could help you with just let me know, we could exchange e-mail addresses and phone #'s and hook-up. Good luck with the air bag light and horn problem.

Message: Well, Cory - if you're just interested in looks, stick with a body lift. The suspension lift is not a simple deal, and you'll have to work it to get the kinks out. If you decide to go with the suspension lift, look around for a local shop to install it - a REPUTABLE shop! Body lifts aren't exactly easy to install, but with some basic knowledge you and a partner could do it in a weekend.
