Message: Ok, i figured i might as well spend a few minutes under my truck and give you the low-down. Being a car nut and a grease monkey with wrenches on the brain...i love a good question/challenge.
Like i said before...taking the leafs out won't be difficult...just try and get the load off the leafs so they won't want to shoot out.
Once out...the most difficult things you'll encounter are the clips that hold the leafs together right now. Once you manage to get them off, putting them back on will be a bitch as well.
Add a leafs aren't supposed to be all that difficult though...i had some friends put some on a toyota pickup...they had a shop to use...but they weren't all that knowledgable and they got it done with out problems.
Just to be safe...warn the hospital anyways.

Message: hehe.. yea.. I know but having my truck up any time at all just buggs me..
Well I broke my transfer case anyway :-\ SON OF A B!TCH!!! Sorry.. Don't normally swear .. but this is going to be expensive and it just REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY!!! PISSES ME OFF!
So it looks like my truck is going to be up for a while anyway.. Maybe the dealer will pay for it.. You think I should wash it before I take it to um? it's only COMPLETELY covered in mud.

Message: The add-a-leaf is pretty easy to do. Like arthur said you have to take the load off the springs. To do that just use 2 4" C-clamps and tighten them down about 4" off center fromt the centering bolt. Then you just have to untighten the nut on the centering bolt and then the springs can release once you remove the c-clamp. Then you just put the new leaf in (the leafs go from longest to shortest) and put a longer centering bolt back in. I had to take a regular bolt and grind the hexes out of the head to make a centering bolt. This is really easy and should take no more than a half hour each side. Of course unless you come across complications, and you know those never happen.
The only real problem with the add-a-leaf is that it makes the suspension really stiff, a rear block is better for offroading purposes, not as stiff of a suspension.

Message: I agree with papa... blocks are easier and ride better than add-a-leafs as long as you don't go bigger than 3". Then you start getting axle rap and problems like that. Although, add-a-leafs are really not that hard to put on either. Added some to my truck and it was the easiest mod I've done, but I also have springs under the axle which saves a little time.
If only are trucks had solid front axles...

Message: ok, two things... A: i feel your pain (sort of) knobbyman... i had a string of problems with my truck recently, one of which being the chain in my transfer case chewing its way OUT of my transfer case... well, at least enough to leave a 3x4" hold in the side, doh! B: blocks are the way to go for just offroading (though watch out, i put 3" on mine, and the housings on my brand new ebrake cables are already broken, they're stretched when the wheels are off the ground). i think i'm gonna have to switch to add a leafs. i carry heavy loads (landscaping materials, 5th wheel trailer, etc.), so i need extra support back there. um, ok, rambled on long enough, bye bye

Message: i got my add a leafs in, took me all of 7 hours, thats with the U-bolts being as bad as they were, i started with a regular 7/8 wrnch, but i needed a 3 foot pipe on it to move it, well i didnt have a big enough pipe to fit the wrench so i needed 2 piped, a short wide one to fit the wrnche then a longer one on the short wide one, needless to say after i got 1 nut off i sent my dad to get me a deep well socket to fit on one of his trips to town, that made it so much easier with a ratchet and 1 pipe, i wish i had a imp[act gun, would have made it all happen in a matter of an hour to get the u bolts off, instead of 5 hours on jsut getting the nuts off the u bolts, its a 1990 and i live in the salt belt, and to boot they have never been moved from the factory, but after that i didnt even try to loosen the center bolts, i took an air cutoff tool , went half way through, took a chisle and heafty hammer and beat the F***** until it flew off and pounded the well rused bolt through the springs, well in the end it was not easier to dp the add a leafs, block would have been much easier
