Subject: 3" Body Lift

Message:
Hey boys, kinda new to the community here but i got a question. I'm wanting to put a 3" body lift to my 98' ext. Dakota and my parents wants to know the pros and cons of taking this action and i also plan on getting new tires too with the lift. So anything at all you can say or suggest, please do.

I really can't say that I have any bad issues with them at all. They look great, are cheap, keep the plush factory ride, and allow for larger tires. I can't say anything bad about mine at all. Oh, and it looks great! Did I say that already?

Ok, but, what exactly happens when you do put a 3" lift on, do you have to mess with the gears or anything. I just thought it was the coil springs and the shocks replaced but, i know soembody experinced in lifts and says maybe not. So....

A body lift is just that, a body lift. Gears aren't involved whatsoever. I'm not really sure what you are wanting to know. Nothing else is touched, all you are doing is raising the body 3" up above the frame. As far as gears go, 3" of lift isn't gonna allow big enough tires to really hurt your performance. You will notice slightly less bottom end grunt but thats it.

Drew.. Basically.. Look under your truck there are 6 mounts 3 on each side where your body bolts to the frame... The idea is to make those 3" thicker so that your truck rides higher. Unless I'm mistaken the only technical thing you have to mess with is adding a extension into your stearing linkage. Other then that it's all simple stuff (not that the stearing isn't .. it just sounds worse).

As long as you have the tools, it's pretty easy to do yourself. Even for a inept goof like me.

I was thinkin about doing it myself but the whole welding thing is making me hesitant. i have a 2001 4x4 ext cab 4.7 with the electronic 4x4 shifter. The one that you turn the knob on the dash. Now i thought i read you dont have to put weld anything if you have that. Is that true or am i just seeing things?

Hey Mr. Bob,
There's no welding required for the body lift. Just like Knobbyman said, the hardest part is the steering linkage, which isn't very hard at all. I have 2001 QC 4x4 5spd 4.7, and I just did mine about a week and half ago. Actaully if you have a 5spd you might have to jimmy rig the center console, because you will not be able to take it out of first gear. I had to move the console 4 inches back and do some trimming on the shifter hole. I'm from SoCal also, what part are you from?

The only welding you'll do is optional, and that's just to install the little metal overload loops (forget what they're called) between the bed and the frame. Only one on each side. I installed mine, but others haven't and I haven't heard any negative side effects from not installing them.

Start Right! Use Autolite!

Hey Bob,
I'm from Riverside County. No, I don't know of any special places. Most of my offroading consist of the hills around where I live. The only good places that I know about are in Baja California and Nellis(which I haven't been to, but planning on going this summer.)

½" drive sockets (both us and metric) torque wrench, allen drive for steering ext. (3/8, I believe...don't quote me) good floor jack and jack stands, something to trim radiator shroud, long screwdriver or something to align mounts/spacers/body to ease bolt installation, drill. Some box end ratchet wrenches really come in handy and of course, another set of sockets/ratchet for your buddy to use!!!!!
