I need some help. I was looking through the pictures of your memebers and saw a purple dakota with a 9 in lift and 38 in tires. I have a 98 with a 3 in body and 33 in tires. I want to make mine have 38's. I liked the way he did his. I have looked and whiplash is the only company that has a 9 in lift. Do you guys know of another, and can you still offroad and pull a boat with any of these lifts.
thanks

Are you sure all he has is the 5in tuff country. It say 9 in on his page (13). Will this affect me trailering a boat? What is the word on the whiplash and how does it handle off road and with trailering boats.

Having your truck on 38s and trying to tow a boat might be a problem. Because of the height you would need a big drop hitch just to hook up to the boat. If you don't change your gears, big rigs will be passing you on the grades. If you have an auto, you might overheat it so plan on a colling system. And last, depending on the size/weight of the boat I don't know how well your brakes will work. Other than all that, you should go for it because it would look great.

You are correct Quadman but I still had to trim quite a bit to keep the tires off the fenders on the street! If anyone plans on running 38s DON`T plan on off-roading!Sure looked good on the road though.

Hey Joe,

I actually found the guy who scott sold that truck to. He crashed it a few weeks ago and it's in the body shop. He dropped it into a gully or something off-roading. Anyhow... those are the only pics available he said he would take some more in a few weeks when he gets the truck back.

I've been contemplating the whole whiplash system myself for the last 2 months while I'm saving $$$. But I can't find anyone near Austin TX to install it for me so I'm most likely going to either have to drive to Houston to do that or go with the body lift and tuff country combo.

But Scotts ride was sweet and I'm not doing any off roading if I dump that much money into something. After gears/ tires/rims/lift/install/ just about 5k.

There are several threads about whiplash and all the stuff scott did to that truck to get it working. do a search

Hey Scott,

I found the guy who had your truck off of a web site and I emailed him. His name is Ryan right? This was his response and how I found out he messed up that nice Purple truck.

"
Bill,

Iam not sure of the backspacing of the rims. The alignment is a little bit off but with tires that size it is hard to keep a true alignment, but is isnt bad at all, and my alignment being off has a lot to do with rolling my truck in an irrigation ditch 6 feet straght down into 2 foot deep muck and having to have a recovery truck winch me out (that is part of the reason i don't have any new pics, Iam still fixing some slight body damage). Another problem your going to have with bigger tires is your camber on your front tires, they are not going to sit flat they will sit at a slight angle which is not a big deal it just reduces the life of your tires, but if you rotate regularly when you switch your tires to the rear they will true out a little bit.

Let me know if you need me to clarify anything, hope i could help.

Ryan

Do you remember the web site? To be honest I`m not sure what his name was. I only spoke to him once or twice. I have a friend that ownes a nice used car lot and he`s the one that sold it for me. If that`s the guy that bought it , he lives 70-80 miles away , and I never see him , or the truck anymore. It`s probably a good thing I don`t see the truck anymore because I`d reallllly miss it. I`m not really sure what he means about the alignment having anything to do with wrecking the truck though , I drove it everyday for a year and a half and never had that problem. It`s not like it pulled bad to one side or the other. I pretty much had the align. problem fixed when I got rid of it. Sorry to hear he crashed it though. Let me know if you hear anything else.

Here's the web site where I got his email address from. This guy makes it sound like he did all the work on that truck which we all know you did. Very amusing. Anyhow, here's the link.

I'm sure he's the one who messed the alignment up after wrecking it. Well, in a few more months, I'll post some pics of my Red Dak looking like that one...lol I could give you visitation rights but's it'll be a hual to Austin, TX...lol

Thanks for the info. I dont know that much about this stuff, but from what I have been reading I guess I am going to go with the Tuff country lif and try to run 35's or 36's if they make those. I was wondering if someone could explain to me what cracking the torsion bar does and how much that and would cost. Also what kind of gears do I need and how much do those cost.
Thanks

Sorry, I have another question, I called Tuff country and they said that their lift is only single shocks and I was wondering if there is any way to have mulitple shocks in the front and rear? Also I read on someones web page that this lift makes the back end sit up high, is this true and how do you fix it? Finally I live in Waco Tx does anyone know of a good place around here that can do the work?
Thanks

99Dak5.2l4x4,
Been to that site before, couldn`t remember it though.I thought the same thing when I read what he said was done to the truck.Never mentioned he BOUGHT it that way! I figured because it was mine I had a biased view , guess not.Good luck with your build-up.

Bill,
Cranking the torsion bars doesn`t cost anything (unless you don`t have the correct size socket).
All your doing is putting more "twist" on the bars which , in turn , raises the front end of the truck. You can only expect and inch to an inch and a half , but as you`ll find out , every inch counts with the Dakotas , as there`s not much out there for us for lifts. You`re somewhat limited in gear selections for the Daks also. What do you have now 3.55s or 3.92s? If you have the 3.92s you probably don`t even need to change them.If you have the 3.55s you might want to find a set of 4.10s of they`re avail.
Price for the gears?....not sure exactly , expect about $250 per set + install kit for each that includes new bearings seals etc...$50-80 approx. Do some calling around , and don`t go for the cheapo brands . Spend a little more a get name brand ones...Precision Gears ...something like that.
As far as a multiple shock set-up... you are going to have to custom fab that youself or pay someone to do it for you.Nothing I know of out there.
The back end comes with and add-a-leaf and a 3in block, so it sits about the same as stock...rear a little higher... not much though.Thats why I "cranked"the torsion bars.

Hey Bill H.

I live in Austin and I was going to have Pickup Heaven do mine. The guy I spoke to was Richard (1800-203-5776) or 512-834-1017 and he quoted me $1200 to install both the 3 in body lift and the 5.5 tuff country suspension lift. I'm not sure how far you are willing to drive but price may decide that for you.

Bill,

I have the TC kit on my truck and I'm running 33x12.50x15 on 15x8 wheels. In order to get 35s or 36s on there you're going to need a body lift, do some trimming or both. As it is, my 33s rub the frame. To fix that I could go to a wheel with less backspacing, but then I need to start watching fender clearances. Also, I don't know how severe the offroading that you're planning on doing is, but the axles on this truck were never intended to take the load of 35-36 inch tires.

About the shocks, with the shocks you get from TC, the ride is about like stock with the rear being a little stiffer due to the add-a-leaf. If you crank the torsion bars, the front will get stiffer as well. From that, if you still don't feel like the TC shocks give you enough damping, try switching to something like a Rancho RS9000 adjustable. I think if you run multiple shocks your kidneys will come to despise you.
