Subject: whats next body lift or keys and blocks? IP: Logged
Message: have a 1994 dakota ext cab 4x4 v8 and i just installed my new mickey thompson 33 baja mtz with rims with a 3 3/4 back spacing. wow these tires and rims look so sweet!!!!
but i am rubbing badly in the front on the splash guard and on the rear of the fender opening. the front can be trimmed but the back can't. so this leads to think i need to lift it. i have been looking on line and at work(I manage a custom shop in detroit).
the trailmaster is first way to expensive and apparently hard to find. so the only practical options are a body lift, which looks like the frame will be way to visible and bumpers might look funny also. what about different torsion keys and blocks in the back? i am wondering if anyone has done this and what are the pros/cons with this setup? they both are in the same price range. i just want to make the better choice so i do not make any mistakes with this 4x4 build. any help would be greatly appericated. i like the height of the truck right now but i need more room in the wheel wells for these sweet tires and rims. thank you for your help!!!!
by the way this is making my 1992 lowered dakota look even smaller now lol thank you guys for your help i have three of these trucks now and they are pretty bad ass lowered or raised

Message: Detroit,
Have you attempted to adjust the torsion bars yet? You didn't mention it in your post. I would try that 1st(it's free). Next, I would jack the rear by the frame...1", 2", 3"...to get an idea of what each lift block would look like before purchasing anything(it's free also).
A 2" body lift is much easier than a 3". When you go to the 3 " things like brake lines from the master cylinder, radiator fan clearance, trans lines, hoses (think radiator, gas filler neck), bumpers, 4x4 shift lever, etc. all become bigger issues. With the 2", the bumpers are easliy raised to fill the gap and there is not a noticable amount of frame exposed.
Now, what I did to clear my 33x10.5 BFG A/Ts:
- Adjusted torsion bars
- 2" body lift
- Trailmaster 4" suspension lift
- Glass Works Unlimited front fiberglass fenders
The 1st two got me clearance enough to drive on the street, provided I didn't turn into any driveways fast. Adding the suspension lift eliminated all rubbing except turned wheels while off road. The fenders got rid of the tire rub while off road (stuffing a wheel in the fender while they were turned). Unfortunately, lifting a Dakota to clear tires is not cheap.
Oh, and my wheels are American Eagles with 3 1/4" back spacing. With your 3 3/4" back spacing (and especially if you have a 12" wide tire) you may not clear the extension block that goes in between the spindle and the upper control arm in the Trailmaster kit. I haven't tried 12" wide tires yet. these seem to wear out front end components quick enough. HA!
Ya gotta pay to play. Good luck.
